Hello everyone. I'm a noob and this question may have already been asked. But I'm in the information gathering and research phase of LS swapping my 2002 V6 5 speed Camaro. I know that I'll ultimately need to replace the transmission with something beefier. But my question for now is, could I use the stock trans and replace it later? And if so, will it require a special adapter to bolt the LS to the stock 5 speed manual? Again, I'm a COMPLETE noob to the forum and hopefully, this isn't a dumb question. But thanks in advance for any info that anyone has and can impart.
It is not without is own share of complications, but the 2005-2009 5.3L LS4 from the FWD applications uses the GM Metric bellhousing bolt pattern (same as your 3800) and will bolt to your transmission. You will still need to work through starter and flywheel and accessory drive challenges, but since you want to keep your transmission, it might be something to consider. You would want to tear it down to a long block and build it back using exhaust and intake manifolds from a RWD LS application.
The LS4 is an aluminum 5.3 with 243/799 heads and flat top pistons and can often be picked up for $1000 or less.
I've been meaning to respond to this for weeks, but kept forgetting. I stumbled upon a YouTube video where a cat was LS swapping a GMC Sonoma that had a stock T5 trans that he wanted to keep.
