Default Some IBooster trials and tribulations

Hello all,

I have been trying a few different ibooster configurations to see what the compatability looks like between iboosters from different vehicles. I was also searching for a budget package as the Tesla setups seem to be going up in price every day. Finding an ibooster/master cylinder for under $500 is tough. I want to adapt this to my 65 Nova 4dr if possible as my ls swap does not make a ton of vacuum.

I took a look at this site and it had a lot of great info:
https://www.evcreate.nl/ibooster-donor-vehicles/

One tough part about this is that the information about which years of which cars have an ibooster is pretty scarce. Salvage yards and their inventory systems also make it complicated. That being said, i think there are a few good options.

I started this project by purchasing an ibooster/master combo for a 2019 Honda Crv. I was able to get it shipped for $120. The bad part is that the reservoir looks kinda crummy as it is set up for a remote reservoir. That being said, the master is clocked the right way. This booster mounts up with 4 studs so you would use 4 nuts on the pedal side. Here is the CRV ibooster with the master removed:

This is the CRV ibooster. Note the bolt pattern.

CRV ibooster mounting

I tried a master from a Porsche Panamera, but it has a totally different and bigger bolt pattern. I also tried a master from a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica. That looked like it would fit but is just off a bit.

I also got a booster/master combo from a Chevy Volt. I knew this had the master clocked sideways, but it looked like it had some extra bolt holes. I think this will work! I just need to tap these holes for M8x1.25 and it should bolt right up. It will be have the master sit at a slight angle but not too bad. I might also try to make an adapter plate for the firewall mount so that i can use my factory mounting holes.

I just need to tap the smaller holes to M8x1.25

With the new mounting location

Back of Chevy Volt ibooster. The mounting bolts pass through the whole body of the booster.

This is the front of the Chevy Volt Ibooster

The Chevy Volt master has a reservoir that looks halfway decent. If you trim the little piece that hangs down in the front, it will also mate up to the CRV master. That reservoir looks like this:

Chevy Volt Master Cylinder Reservoir

All together

So while all the iboosters are similar, they are not exactly the same. The Volt ibooster mounts at a very different angle from the factory. The masters also go in to different depths. They also use different size brake line nuts. Here are some pics side-by-side:

Different master cylinder mounting

Different brake line fittings

Once you have a working mounting solution, master cylinder, and reservoir, you just need to work on the pedal side. Once you unscrew the rod or clevis that comes with them, you just have a threaded rod. I plan to weld a new metric nut to my factory clevis that attaches to the pedal. Then i can just use a coupler and a piece of threaded rod to set the length to the pedal.

The website above has pinouts for these and the wiring is too bad. I am kinda stumped on one thing though. I can't figure out how to depin this connector. I have looked at a lot of videos but nothing has worked. Any ideas? It is a 26 way Bosch connector.

How do I depin this?

Thanks for reading and i hope this helps someone! Cheers!

Wow, thats a bunch of time, $$ and effort to not just use a $15 remote brake reservoir on the factory CRV master cylinder. Far as the connector, it looks like a tiny piano key tab in next to the pin that you pull away from the pin and pull the wires out toward the original harness. I need to get the pigtails for my iBooster.

Looked on Rock Auto for an IBoost but can't find a listing. Any other source? Don't have a local junkyard.

Yup! But I plan on reselling almost everything on eBay that I don't end up using. I got a Tulay Wire works kit for the connectors before I knew one of the units came with a pigtail.

The plan is to make a second kit for someone to use from the 2nd booster, master, and wire kit.

In case anyone else was also banging your head against the wall trying to figure out how to depin this connector, there is a little pink tab that is inside that you need to unlock and shift to the side. It's easily done with a screwdriver, and then you can bend the little tab down and it's easy to depin.

You can see what I'm talking about in the pictures below. Some IBooster trials and tribulations-photo740.jpgSome IBooster trials and tribulations-photo134.jpg

It appears the Chevy Volt Master uses m14 inverted fittings

and the Honda Crv master uses m12 bubble, just fyi!

Got everything mocked up and made an adapter bracket. I had to raise the coils about an inch to clear the booster. I'm hoping to have a test done by the end of the week. Progress! Some IBooster trials and tribulations-photo584.jpg

Looks great! Can you post pictures of the adapter bracket you made?

Here ya go. I held a piece of 1/8" steel over the bolt holes, and then marked it, profiled it, drilled holes and welded the bolts on. I used a 1 1/2 inch piece of 2.5 inch pipe to connect that plate to the mounting plate that came with the booster. I was also able to adjust the angle so it sits relatively straight.
