Default Fuel Line sizing at pump/sending unit..5.3L LM7 w/cam &headers

Hey guys,

Tried finding some info on this but no luck. 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer swap. Putting a 5.3L LM7 with a truck norris cam and headers. Nothing crazy for this thing. I ordered an efi conversion pump sending unit for the factory gas tank and they (novak) told me over the phone that it had 3/8" on supply side and 5/16" for the return (thinking great i did this on my ls3 79 vette swap, it'll work fine).

Got the sending unit in today and its the factory GW size of 5/16" supply and 1/4" for return. Are those sizes sufficient for this setup or should I return it and go a different route for this LS setup?

I'm routing -6an from pump to typical filter/regulator close to tank, then -6an supply up to fuel rails and -6an return back to sending unit.

thanks for any advice.

Ryan

I would contact Novak. I've used them for my 98 Wrangler LS6/4L60E swap. Zero issues.

do you recall having 5/16 supply and 1/4 return at fuel sending unit ?

Not trying to bad mouth them. I know 3/8 or -6an is typical sizing and didn't know if this would be a bottle neck or what

Send it back. The 5/16 supply line is too small for an LS, especially with a cam. It will likely starve the engine for fuel at higher RPM. You need a minimum 3/8 supply. The 1/4 return is also too small. Get the correct unit with 3/8 supply and 5/16 return.

I agree the 5/16" and 1/4" is too small.
Just a question? Does the Novak tank include the fuel pump (like a Walbro 255) along with the fuel level sensor? Any pics?
When I built my TJ I used the stock tank but I made the mount for the fuel pump/level sender and the -6 SS fuel lines. Kind of hard to explain but the TJ tank opening for the fuel pump has a big plastic nut that kind of looks like a big fruit jar nut holding a round plate in place. I made a new round metal plate that I mounted the fuel pump/sender and then using -6 o-ring fittings for the output and return. Then a C5 FFR.

5/16 will supply enough fuel for a cam only engine

On all my LS swaps I've used -6 SS line from the tank to the FFR. Then to the fuel rail. -6 back to the tank from the FFR.

-6 or 3/8 will support cammed 5.3 18psi boost on e85.

5/16 will easily do a cam only 5.3

Yes, see picture of the novak setup I received. It sounds like they're the same or similar sending unit. My tank is plastic and it does have a large plastic nut that keeps it in place. Do you have a picture of your setup?

Mixed responses. I've done 3/8 with -06an on a ls3 with a cam and no issues. Maybe I expected too much of them for $300 even after confirming sizes over phone and receiving something different.

Thanks for the advice..

Same.

If y'all saw how simple the fuel system is in my Cougar, you would be shocked.

Just me but I would replace those ss screw type fuel hose clamps with real FI hose clamps. You can buy a variety pack at NAPA.

on a different note, many say that the factory GW plastic tank is not great for EFI due to the lack of baffling. you could probably get around this by keeping the tank at least 1/2 full. its my understanding that many use a tank from i think a 1997 2 door blazer? and it fits behind the rear axle where the spare would normally be. the 97 blazer tank is already set up for EFI. hope that helps

you are right the fuel sloshes a lot with factory tank..... I'm going to try the hydramat once it's up and running. Fuel gauge will still vary buy should starve of fuel. Not sold on the blazer conversion yet.
