Default Where to mount the computer in 3rd Gen

Getting ready to start my LS1 swap into a 1985 Trans Am. Will I be able to mount the LS1 computer in the same place as the TPI computer?

I'm putting a LS1 in 55 chevy and I'm not sure yet where I can mount my pcm. So, I purchased the extra length Painless harness which has about 4 foot of extra cable on it.

I should have mentioned one draw back to using the Painless harness is that you will need a '98 pcm part # 16238212. At least that is the only LS1 harness they had last winter when I ordered mine.

Im puttin an ls1 in my 92 camaro, and im not the far yet, but how about relocating the battery and putting the pcm there. I dont know if your wiring harness has enough lenght to reach that, but might work. Another problem is where to relocate te battery, I have subs in the back, so i can put it under there, but I dont know where else you could relocate it. Just giving you some ideas. Let us know what ya end up doin.

i was actually thinking of having teh harness lengthened a bit so i can use the stock 3rd gen mounting location. since i am going heater only i have a bit of extra space in tehre adn i was gonna make a "cool box" with the help of a few friends taht are into very high end computers. a pair of 90mm case fans and a little ducting will keep it at a good temp adn avoid how ugly it looks under the hood

with the heat that is generated underhood to begin with , i don't see why you need to put fans on the ecm under the dash.

because the air under the hood is still moving, so it is still somewhat evaporative. under teh dash there is no air movement, so heat soak can occur.

good point. you could get Speartech or Hawk's to build you one custom but the premade ones are all meant to go underhood. one of the guys in my car club has done this swap in a '92 RS , his is underhood , i haven't decided where to put mine yet , it is a little unsightly there . you'l need to get the vss to cable drive for the speedometer , too.

Just for info, Bruce Hawkins (Hawk) is featured in November issue of High Performance Pontiac. His site is:

www.hawksthirdgenparts.com

I hope that doesn't step on any of the sponsors, since he is a swap to Third Gen specialist.

I put mine under the pass side dash where the stock ECM was...Then for the OBD2 plug I cut 2 of the grates out of the lower panel (in that vent they have) so I can pull the plug out and scan the PCM. Putting it under the hood looks pretty bad and not thought out, IMO under the dash is the only way to go. Under the dash you can't see it, and if you cut 2 of the grates of the lower panel's vent you don't even know its there and you can still access it.

My PCM is mounted where it was on the 4th gen. I have an AC delete box so that cleared up a bit of room. My mounting isnt perfected but it looks pretty good. Honestly, I dont see myself spending the cash for an aftermarket harness to relocate the PCM under the dash. Nor do I want to cut and lengthin 80 or whatever wires to relocate it. Tho it might be a good idea. Anyway, thats the poor mans location. Passenger side between the strut tower and the firewall.
