If you're going to put it behind an LS1, the PCM needs the VSS signal to function properly. So some searching on VSS to find a few threads that talk about why the computer needs to know if you're moving.

If this isn't the case, D&D Performance (http://www.ddperformance.com/) might be a good place to start. I don't know where you are, but they're local to me in the Detroit area.

Another alternative is to use one of our Speedometer Control Units (SCU). The part number is 377300. It translates the electrical signal into a mechanical output. You'll also need a cable. Part number 377301 fits the '71 and older threaded style speedo. Part number 377302 fits the later model clip on speedo.

I'm using an Abbott Cable-X converter box which takes the VSS signal from the trans and converts it to a mechanical cable drive. Haven't installed it yet but have heard positive feedback about it.

Kevin,
What is the cost of your unit? I have no speedo in my car because I couldn't justify the cost of the Cable-X. I'm sure there are people out there looking for a lower-cost solution.
Thanks,
Matt

There is a company www.stealthconversions.com who converts T56 tail housing to mechanical and VSS. They have the conversion for LT1, but not LS1. Would there be any differences w/ the signal?

Hi Matt,
The price directly from us is $400. I'm sure you could save a few dollars by going through one of the LS1Tech Sponsors.

In my case the Cable-X was the cheaper option. At the time, a modified tailshaft cost more. The other factor is that I wanted an Autometer 200mph speedo with a standard odometer and it was only available as a mechanical gauge.

I'm in the planning stage right now but as soon as my conversion is complete I plan on making my own electrical to mechanical converter using a few ICs and a stepper motor. Shouldn't cost more than twenty bucs. When I get it made and tested I'll post a schematic.
