Default RX7+LS1 ?s.

I know people are doing this swap.I was wanting to sit down and crunch the numbers and if it wouldn't put me into to much debt I would like to do it.I would sell my camaro and buy a rx7 sans body and do the LS1/6speed conversion. How much would the conversion cost and what all would I need to do and change? Thanks guys.

Sell a camaro to buy a mazda?
Why? Insurance cost is my only thought.

Just add more POWER. I haven't seen a mazda with more "style" than a 98+ camaro. Just my opinion. Is your camaro beat up?

Have you done a search for RX7 on the board?
There is a lot of RX7/LS1's out there.

Thanks.I'll check that out.I did a search and saw some people here have done them before.Just trying to get a general idea so I can crunch the numbers.
My Camaro is in great shape.Low miles.I'm just thinking of something different. If I don't do this I may look for another LS1 and put it in my 91 s10.

I've had my eye on doing an LS1 swap into a Miata....but I think a RX7 would be more realistic. We'll see what happens in the future.

You'd buy an RX7 with no body? (sans means without)

FWIW: An rx7 body thats in far from perfect shape is going to be a minimum of 5k.. and perfect will likely be 7k-8k. Worth it? Yes.. but expect to spend another 10k getting the conversion done with driveline, and all parts needed.

Peace,
Josh

do you want to start with a '93+ or with an FC (86-91)?

Just swapping in the engine, no other mods?

Can you do the work yourself?

You can get an idea of how much the mounting gear and other necessary systems will cost from the Hinson site, the rest is just the labor of putting it it.

Any LS1 FD ('93-'95) will spank just about any other car on a road course and put up high 11s/low 12s with a completely stock LS1/T56 combo. And 50/50 weight distribution. And they look gorgeous.

FCs have the same potential but have a slightly less desireable suspension setup and rollers can be had for $500-$700.

I am partial to FCs. They are very inexpensive and definitely have the "sleeper" advantage. So far my best pass has been 11.71 @ 121 MPH. I expect to get that down into the low 11s soon.

With that in mind it'll be relatively cheap since you'll just be paying for parts.

From Hinson I'd get just the mounting hardware and the hydraulic upgrade from Hinson but nothing else. You can do the fueling upgrade (convert to aftermarket rails, regulator, pump) and the cooling upgrade (get the biggest radiator that will fit from Summit). Huntsville Driveshaft can mod the driveshaft for you for cheap- I got an aluminum LS1 driveshaft for $100 and had new joints/shortening performed for $170 shipped so the total cost to my door was around $275 (vs. their $425 for a new one). I personally haven't done the engine harness mods yet, but I've modded other harnesses and all it takes is the shop manual and some patience. You'll also need the PCM modded depending on whether you run AIR, EGR, evap, etc. This can be done cheaply as well (in the range of $25-$60 to reflash).

The only tricky parts about the swap will be keeping A/C and power steering, I am doing neither on my FC swap so they might not even be hard- probably just measure the necessary line length and bring them to a local fittings/industrial line shop to make the custom hoses.

Go for it!!!!

Ben

If you really really keep costs down, you could have a FD on the road for ~14k. It just takes a shitload of time to get all the parts together...
