Default 6.0 vs. LS1 in 1st gen conversion????

what are the pros and cons of each engine? my main goal is a reliable 400 rwhp in a daily driven car. i have been gathering info for a while but i have found very little on the performance of the 6.0 engine. i found a 99 6.0 with the computer for $1400. i still need a wiring harness but i think any harness will work. so should i hold out for a LS1 or jump ont he 6.0 truck?

excellenet question! I'm really entertaining a LSx Fox Body Mustang, and don't care about the extra weight of the iron 6.0, they are soooo much cheaper than the LS1.

6.0 is a lot cheaper. But weighs 100lbs more.

also, 6.0 already has 4" bore, so you can go to a 408 rather easily without having to worry about resleeving an aluminum block...

You can always change the heads to aluminum and save weight if you wanted to. I always heard "there is no replacement for displacement".

The 6.0l is a great platform to start off with, the 6.0L w/317 heads are great motors and make a ton of power. I have a stock 6.0L w/ LS6 intake and headers in my camaro and run 12.3's all day. The really neat thing about the iron block motors is their strength. The LS1 engine was designed from the begining as an aluminum block, the iron block is the same design and therefore MUCH stronger than its aluminum counterpart.

I wouldn't pay that much for an iron headed 6.0L. Those iron heads are heavy junk.

If you do get a 6.0L, look for a 2001+ model with aluminum heads. About the only negative is the 100 lbs added for the block vs an aluminum LS1 block.

with an LS1 you are almost @ 400 hp already! swap out the cam and your there. Have the heads done and your @ 450 hp. A few other things and your over 500. Then add a blower and your @ 600. throw some NOS on and your @ 700.

BTW: I got mine @ a swap meet for $1000, it came out of a 32k mile wrecked SS Camaro.
