Default 55 and a ls1

My current project is a 55 2 door post and I would like to put a ls1 backed by a tko 5 speed tranny. My question is what kind of mods is need to be made(oil pan oil pump pick up trans tunnel). I havn't purchased either engine or trans yet I was wandeing what the best doner to pull from vette camero that would have the best exhaust manifolds and oil pan to fit my application. I would like to keep the stock sterring and not switch to rack and pinnon.

It's the same motor ,doesn't matter. Why would you want to use a 5sp?
Check out the hybrid LS1 section you may find something or use search. Get yourself a T56, 6sp.

Yeah I don't no what a camero is either pardon me for the typeo. Typing or spelling is not my thing pulling wrenches is. I do not want to use a T56 because I am going to use the stock interior and the T56 will not clear the bench seat. They make a tremec TKO with altered shifter location and sell the shifter, and the cable to work the clutch. They also offer the speedo cable that will work the stock instrument cluster.

In my car which was an auto originally, the stick for the six speed ended up in the same position.

It will also depend on where your engine mounts place the engine. On my '69, with the BRP mounts, the shifter came out in the exact same place as my original 4-speed.

Camaro and Vette LS1s are the same engine, just different pulley layout, different oil pan. You can find used exhaust manifolds just about anywhere, especially on ebay.

Go with the T56, its alot better, and like many said before, will work with your seat. You probably want to use corvette brackets to mount the alternator on the drivers side head. The camaro will mount it down low, and might hit the front crossmember. You might get away with using a truck oil pan and pickup tube, DON'T get the modified pan from S+P, the fabrication looks like a 2 year old did it. They also have problems with their pickup tubes. Their motor mount adapters are pretty good though. Good luck with your swap!!!

Thanks for all the info. I wasn't sure about the trans and did not know that the shifter would come out in the same location. I agre that the 6-speed would be a better option. Now to get out and find a donor car. I think that a 55 LS1 will be a bitchen Hot Rod ,low gears ,great gas millage , good horse power, and proably some ET's in the high 12's. What is your opinion?
