Angry MAC Mids hitting the steering shaft!

1994 v6 swapped to a 1998 LS1 auto. Only remaining parts on the car is the steering column, steering rack, tank and fuel lines.

here is the problem:

did anyone have a problem with the steering shaft when upgrading headers? i tried to install MAC mids and ypipe yesterday and 3 hours later after bolting the headers down, I found out that the steering shaft is going to hit the driver side header. i can't even connect it back! I had to put the stock manifolds back on but the flange bolt on each side of the manifolds have 1 broken bolt. I didn't had enough time to put everything back together because it was so damn cold out. now my car is sitting in the driveway with no ypipe on.

im using my 1994 steering column and 1994 steering rack. does anyone know if i can change the intermediate shaft with a 98-up shaft and have enough clearance for the headers? do i have to replace the complete rack on the car as well? im so pissed! i really wanted this thing bolted up yesterday.

is there anyway around this? i hate to put the stock ones back because the ypipe will leak due to a missing bolt on each side of the manifolds.

Sorry to hear that man. But for my conversion, I had to swap out the whole rack n pinion, never tried just switching the linkage. My mac mid's barley clear with the new rack. But good luck with it.

Your prob will be solved with a 99 or later V-8 LS1 rack and sector shaft. I happen to have one with hoses ,shaft and cooler priced right.

One of the guys in my car club swapped an LS1 into a '98 v6 car. Thge rack & pinions are different. The V6 R&P showed the same part# as the LT1 rack . The LS1 rack was angled up over a bit further to the the right . His steering shaft wouldn't fit either after the swap but it DID fit when he installed the LS1 rack Here's a pic of the two racks , the top rack is the V6, the bottom is the LS1:

Yea what else is new, LoL, My mac mids hit the steering shaft as well. But for me its only under load- and Im using all 98 + parts. I installed my headers with the shaft on the car. I figure if I ever put my front sway bar back on I wont hit under load. ( and while turning ) is the only time it does it. For referance , I did an install on a 99 Ls1. the install was harder but the shaft doesnt hit. Just seems liek the motor sits a little different.

I have a '99 and my new MAC's fit very well. Sorry you're having problems. Maybe a '99 rack will cure your problems, as the other dude had said.

Does your car have the old style steering shaft with a ragjoint? The newer cars use a double cardian style joint. I have been told that this helps with header clearance.

Here is alink to what the new style shaft looks like.

That would be me.

I tried changing just the steering coupler first. (the part between the column and the rack). That didn't work. It is designed differently, but it still needed to be in the same place as the #1 header tube...

Swapping to an LS1 rack fixed it.

I was having clearance problems with the p/s lines and the alternator too, until I switched racks.
