Default LS1 in 86 LX Coupe

I just purchased this project that's not yet complete, but the engine, trans, radiator are in the car already. It's an 02 Z28 motor with 33k miles on it. The car is a white 86 ex chp lx coupe. I need to know if anyone else has done this before, since I might need some help on the wiring (PITA) and perhaps some gauge issues. I'll keep you all updated and post pics as soon as I pick the car up .

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,
Garrett

Yea, going to get some today, the only pics I have are of the physical body of the car, not the engine bay. I'll post the engine photos I get tonight .

I'm doing the same thing into a 89 coupe. I have the tubular K-member installed, steering rack, and some other fitment things completed. Did your car come with a wiring harness? I have a good source for harnesses, PM me if you need some info on it. My car has a TH350 and transbrake, no speedo, just a tach, oil pressure, water temp, and LED for a SES light.

I have the painless kit that came with it when I bought it... it has a 4L60E and has nothing in the interior, it weighed 2489? when I bought it, so we'll see . I'm going to keep it a street monster, I have a Holden engine cover thats going on it to hide the 150 shot and I'm going to put on it. I'm gunna put one seat in it and have the dash put back in as well, other than that... nothing else is going on the interior . It'll get 28+ mpg and still run low 11's/10's on the bottle.

What steering rack did you put in it?? I was just going to grind the stock one..

I didnt realise how much space there is in the engine compartment, looks like you have more room than I do on my 81 camaro. It should be pretty simple to get together, if you need help, your on the right website. Good luck. I will have to send the pics to the ford guys I know, they will love it too.

I still have the coil packs, radiator and some other stuff to put on...a/c bracket... but eh. There's a lot of room. I think I saw a remote mount coil pack setup on a 40's chevy at Hot August Nights last year, so I'll look around for that, since the motor looked amazing.

AHA!!! GOMER'S SECRET PLANS ARE BUSTED!!! Wait till I tell the gang at HSVracing.com!

Back on topic, send the wiring to speartech and get yourself some MAC headers for a 351 in a fox, and weld LS1 flanges on them. Voila!

Damn, I've been busted Just stay quiet for about 3 or 4 more weeks and then I don't care who you tell.

Btw, I reused my MAC 302 headers.. just chopped off the flanges and had LS1 flanges welded onto them.

The flanges off ls1 headers? or the stock manifolds? My steering column has a problem with clearance... wiring wise--- should I sell the painless kit? This is the setup that I was told to get....

02 Z28 Motor with 4l60e
97-98 Painless LS1 Kit
I was told to get a 98 PCM?

Any help on this would be great.... I need to have the wiring done this week hopefully.

What would it take to make the headlights and accessories work?

Also, would you have a custom driveshaft made or take an ls1 aluminum one and have it cut and balanced to fit? Any sugestions on the cross member to hold the 4L? Sorry to ask so many questions guys .

The headlights and accessories will work when you plug the battery in. Unlike the F-body, none of that stuff runs thru the PCM in a fox, particularly your 86. As long as the fuse box has power and the switches for the items are in place, it'll work.

Let gomer square you away on the wiring issues, since that's more his forte.

I've always heard the 351 headers fit better because the primary is a little longer, but if you got 302 headers working then that's great. Experimentation like that is what makes these projects fun.

Gomer, I was only bugging you. I won't tell anybody.

Gomer and 99SSinOC, what K member? 4.6 or 87-93? I'm doing a 86 also...
Already got a 8.8 and running 13" Cobra discs (5 lug conversion) need to know what front suspension you're using.
Also, motor mounts or plates?
I'm wanting a T56 also...

Standard motor mounts for chevy swap into a ford... the k member is the tubular one made for the chevy swap as well... I'm using 4 cyl springs in the front to launch... it sits high but the weight transfer will be scary

Guys...check out my thread here...

https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-swaps/286585-new-discoveries-ls1-into-mustangs-swaps.html

There is some info for motor and tranny mounts. I was able to use my factory K-member (96-up for mod motors obviously) and factory motor mounts(also for a Mod motor car), slightly modified and the LS1 fit perfectly in the engine bay.

From an engine mount and header standpoint, there is no difference in the two. A fox k-member will bolt into a SN-95 and vice versa.

I'm using a QA1 tubular K-member for a 96 and up mustang with a 4.6. My fab guy did the mounts onto that K-member and we used a flaming river manual rack, he also built a crossmember for the TH350. If you use the 02 engine with a 98 PCM, be sure that whoever does your PCM tuning knows that the engine, MAF, injectors, etc is an 02. The 96 Kmember went right into the car without any problems, as did the Flaming river rack. I bought a set of header flanges from Scoggin Dickey to weld onto my MAC mustang headers. I haven't been able to work on the car in the past two weeks, but I have a real good chassis shop that is doing all the "metal" work for me. Let me know if you need anymore info.
