Default 98 Motor - Which ECM Will Work

98 donor motor taken care of, unfortunately no ECM or harness. Does the ECM have to be a 98 or will any LS1 ECM work? Couldn't find anything using the search. Tks.

Never mind, found a 98 ECM/Harness on the buy/sell. If someone has a good answer you might go ahead and post it. Maybe it will help out someone else.

It won't matter. You can use a 2002 ECM and harness with a 1997 LS1, or use a 1998 ECM and harness with a 2004 LS1. What you need to worry about is using a 97-98 harness with a 97-98 ECM, or 99+ harness with 99+ ECM. Unless you don't mind repinning the early 97-98 harness to the newer 99+ ECMs.

Also of note, the sensors are different on a '98 then later models. At least the coolant temp sensor, I think a couple other are different as well. Not that that is hard to fix, but worth noting at least.

Crewchef,
It looks like you just joined, so I will put in my 2 cents. Since you don't have the PCM or the harness, you may want to do some more research before you make a purchase. I would look at these two items as one even though you will probably purchase them seperately.

In addition to mating the right harness, you may want to extend the harness so that you can hide your PCM and keep your engine compartment clean. There are several aftermarket harnesses available that make the conversion easier with 4 or 5 wire hook ups and can also be purchased with extra length cabling. And, some of these may require a certain PCMs.

Good luck and welcome to ls1tech.

Yeah painless wirings harness requires the 97-98 PCM. But Speartech can make a harness for whatever you get, with the custome lengths and so on.

The 98 coolant temp sensor is different, as posted above. Other than that it's the same. The only other real difference is that the 97-98's use different water pump gaskets.

John, I'm pretty green on the LS motors, but was able to snag an '03 Corvette LS-1 sans wiring and ECM. Not long after, a '97 Vette harness came up so I bought it. Somewhere else on this board I was told it wouldn't work... Are you saying I'll just need to swap the coolant temp sensor and buy a 97 - 98 ECM?

I am giving thought to reselling the '97 harness and going aftermarket for everything (FAST XFI, possibly)...

Thanks!
