Default I want to put a LS1 in a 73 camaro!

I just got rid of my 93 Z28 LT1 6 speed for a 73 Z28. I know for sure I am going to make it a 6 speed. And I want to put a LS1 in it. What kind of money are we talking about. Stock LS1, tranny, computer, and harness out of donor car around $3500-4000. Will I need to modify the motormounts or the k member? If you know of a site that has a 2nd gen with a LS1 please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

I am interested in this as well. I would love to drop a LS1/T56 into the '80 Berlinetta I have sitting behind my shop. Hopefully someone will chime in with some help.

Have you checked out www.nastyz28.com ? I know they have a pretty decent tech forum. Nothing like this one, of course, but it still has some decent info. Which six speed are you converting to? How are you going about it? What motor are you using?

I have an LS6 in my '74 Camaro. So far I'm in a little over $7000.00 (including the cost of the car) . You have the car , if you do most of the work yourself you can have an awesome machine. Just figure $3-4000.00 LS1/T56, budget fuel system (inline ) $250.00, wiring harness $700.00, misc. $500.00. Mine will be considerably more because my '74 was a pile - I'm wasn't just putting in a LSx into an old car I 'm rebuilding the whole car mechanically and cosmetically. When you're done you won't believe how much fun the car will be .... lighter , faster , better handling, reliable, and economical- the $ I'm saving in gas , this might pay for itself in a few years!!! Do it !!

I'll be taking some pics once I get a little further along this week . Just got my 90* elbow in from Air flow Systems ( been driving with a cheap OSH $3.00 elbow which was absorbing a lot of heat and raising the inlet air temp by about 30 degrees). Have to cut my original battery tray so I can locate my KN lower to grab some cool air. Pics will be coming.

Did you have to mod the k-member, motor mounts, or tranny mounts?

No modding of k-member or trans mount( other than drillimg 2 holes thru the frame and moving the front trans brace back one hole) . Meaning that the back bolt- towards rear is now the front bolt hole. Hope that helps. Motor mount plates(S&P style) bolt right up to motor then drop the engine and drill your holes and you're done. No welding at all.
Good luck,
NICK

My motor sits about 2" back from the stock location. Better weight transfer and displacement.

Can I ask why you went with the 700R4 instead of a 4L60E or similar trans? How was that install? Did it bolt up good or was there a lot of fabrication on that end?

Does anyone know how headers fit in the 2nd gen engine bay. Long tubes or shorties. Is a cowl hood required for the LS1 swap? Thanks

The 700 was a cheaper solution. Since this is a low budget buildup the $100.00 adapter plate( and the $60.00 700R4 univ. TV cable),was offset by the savings in the trans($300.00 less), I got to use my factory speedo( a must for a sleeper) - no $300.00 conversion box, and since I had HP tuner I could delete the VSS, but perhaps most important my buddy who builds very strong 700R4 is not as comfortable with the 4L60E. This thing shifts very hard which is how I like it. This thing will bark the tires at anything more than 1/2 throttle- I love it. Now I gotta install the T350-700R4 detent conversion so I can use my stock shifter and console (sleeper) and get all manual low gears with postive lockout.
Just hooked up my factory tach( Baker TSD box) - it's coming along ...slowly but surely.

Im planning an ls1 conversion for my 78 camaro, its cool to see other 2nd gens. It has a 350ci/350 auto in it now, I wanted a 6 speed, would it be cheaper to throw some other tranny in there? If I get a complete engine, transmission, and wiring harness out of a junked 98-02, how much extra will it be costing me? What about the driveshaft?

I was just curious what your reasons were.........it sounds like you are gonna have one helluva an awesome ride/sleeper when she is all done.

All you would need is the Motor mount plates? is this for use with the LS1 motor mounts or the 70s mounts? - How does the LS1 motor mount work with the plates? and
