Default Bastard Wagon

Hey guys... the engine i have isnt an LS1 but its still a chevy 350 so i figured
i'd sign up here and do my first post about my project...

as the title states, its a bastard wagon... the car is a 1982 Toyota Corolla Wagon, weighin in at about 2300lbs, give or take... its got a 3TC 1.8 liter engine that made 73 rear wheel horsepower (last owner dynoed it) and its a 5 speed...

the engine is an early 70s 350 from a chevy pickup, before they had any EGR stuff so before 73... the guy who sold it to me sed its 71 or 72 so i'll run it thru my chevy by the numbers book and we'll see... picked it up yest... it came with a 3 speed automatic turbo 350 tranny. it has a stall thats a bit higher than stock but he had no idea wut it wus... it ran when they pulled it about 2 weeks ago... the engine is supposed to be a 4 bolt main and the carb is a holley 650 cfm or 600, he had no idea but a few of my friends have a bit of carb experience guessed around there... its nasty right now but here are some pics of the car and engine...

should be a fun little project... if i break the rear end in there now, id have to go with a ford rear end because the foxbody rear end might not need any fabrication... so it'll really be a bastard... my friend offered me her 10 bolt off her camaro SS but that would take too much work... basically, i wanna have a drag car as fast as possible for as little as possible, hopefully under 2 grand... the car cost me around 350 bucks and the engine 300 bucks... any ideas on wut i shud do? how hard its gonna be? has anyone ever done anything like this? thanks

Budget build up - cool ! I remember when Car Craft did a series on these. Then they had a competition to see who could build the fastest for under $3,000 ...i think. I tried a budget build up with a car, then it lead to a new motor, new trans.,etc. The speed bug bites hard...so try to stick with a budget. Used parts can be your friend.

On a final note - that has to be one of the last surviving original early 70's era complete pull-out 350's. The salvage yards around here have been picked clean since the late 80's.

yea ive been trying to stay on the budget, partially cus im a poor college stoodint and i also have my daily driver that gives me a few expenses from time to time... and a gf to buy dinner for lol... but ill probly be using plenty of used parts... it'll be a hard fit ill have to us eblock hugger headers and i found a set of new ones for 90 bucks so thats worth it... ill probly just run it like it is and weld a muffler to the headers and call it a day... then when i get used to the V8 (my daily driver is a 4 banger) and i need more speed, ill start trying to make horsepower

thanks, im uploading pics tonight cus i took the tranny off to put it on the stand... torque converter = my enemy... it just wouldnt come off...

thats a HOT little wagon... wish we could find those up here in the Northeast.

yea i like the wagon... eventually ima redo the paint job, make it gloss black and put in some nice seats and a cage, then rip off the carpeting and add new **** carpet so i can call it the ******** wagon... hopefully as haggard as possible... that way hopefully no one will notice the 350 and the big air filter sticking out the hood (it will never fit under the hood... im eventually getting a fiberglass cowl done but until then, rocking out with a piece of the hood cut out)

I put a CHP Mustang 5.0 in a 1983 Mitsubishi pickup a few years ago. It had a Disc brake Dana 44 from an Isuzu Rodeo, 88 EFI 5.0 HO motor, T5 world class 5 speed, Mustang R&P steering, S10 bucket seats, R134 air, 16" Acura MDX rims and a few things I'm sure I forgot. I had less than $2500 in it after having driven it for 6 years. I probably didn't buy one new part except for spark plugs, a clutch disc, main bearings and brake pads. Never got around to getting it painted. Sold it for $3500. Too cheap. literally cried as it drove away.

yea i refuse to sell my old 77 beetle... have it back home... no way i cud get rid of it but i have to start considering getting rid of it soon... anyone know of a smaller oil pan to use? if i use the one that came with the 350, the engine will sit too high so id need a flatter oil pan
