Default Hardware: where do you get the nuts and bolts?

I'm in the beginning stages of my Fiero/LSX conversion. I'm going to need to find bolts and nuts for my adapter plates, engine mounts and accessories. Where do you guys go to get you hardware? I just don't want a hodgepodge of nuts and bolts that don't match and turn into an eyesore. Also, all the bolt holes on the LSX blocks are metric, right? Thanks for the input!

There are a bunch of solutions....

1.) Your local Ace or Truevalue store would love your business, but often have limited metric selections.
2.) Check your local area for fastener supply houses (like Fastenal or similar firms) particularly ones that specialize in metric fasteners.
3.) Use a big catalog supplier. McMaster Carr is my personal favorite (mcmaster.com), they have almost everything, prices are usually pretty good, and in my area they deliver next day (your results will vary).
4.) Order parts from GM, if you've got a good working relationship with a stealership (oops, I mean dealership)

Awesome. Is the catalog stuff bulk only? I was thinking of going to GM since I get a god discount, but there is going to be stuff that I need, like cap screws, that's not factory. Thanks for the input!

I bought all my bolts from the stealership since I was unable to find the automotive only grade 8 bolts at other places. I checked with every local bolt company and ARP.

Steven,
Try Austin Bolt over on Rutland drive. They can sell you almost any grade 8 bolt you can imagine, and they have no minimum purchase. A lot of guys just go over to the local hardware or home center and this scares me. I saw a guy's ride that had grade 2 bolts from Home Depot on his front suspension!
Most of these places do not carry anything but grade 2. I usually use bolts from Totally Stainless. They have a line of high-strength stainless bolts that is unbelieveable, but they are not cheap. I build show type cars, and I love being able to polish these bolts up to a mirror finish.

Regards, John McGraw

Depending on the type of auto parts stores you have in the area, you might be able to get the bolts there. I know I got alot of mine from the local mom and pop hardware store. They stocked alot of bolts and so on. They also dealed alot in farm implements and such.

Another thing to keep in mind is this:

You can't buy metric grade 8 bolts. Grades 2, 5, & 8 are the commonly available SAE grades. Commonly available metric grades ar 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, and occasionally 13.9. If I remember right, SAE grade 8 falls in between the 10.9 & 12.9 metric grades.

McMaster typically doesn't sell by the piece. Typically end up buying box quantities, so it may not work for you.

There are a ton of places that sell bolts by the piece.

Unfortunately, many fasteners are not available commercially, and have to be purchased from GM. That sucks but those are the minority.

Called em for the clutch flywheel and transmission bellhousing bolts, gave them the metric sizes and they said to go to GM.
