This type of setup has adavantages to the stock ECM, but for many of us, it also has many disadvantages. For those of us who are just retrofitting a modern drivetrain into an older car, we are looking for drivability, reliability, and ease of troubleshooting. The GM ECM gives us the knock sensors to protect the engine, support for fly-by-wire throttle, integrated cruise control, built in diagostics that can be read by any scanner, and the list goes on and on. There are several companies building electronic engine control based on the Dephi controller, but while they have some nice features, they are not for everyone. There are also dozens of companies that fabricate new harnesses for the stock ECM, and reprogram the computers. I build real-world street cars that are driven a lot, and I will stick with the GM setup as long as the advantages of them out weigh the disadvantges of them. I have used harness and computers from Speed Scene for a while, and talk about your plug and play! You just land the terminals and turn the key! I am sure that Painless and Speartech's GM based setups are just as easy to setup and install.
Regards, John McGraw

Painless is looking for a someone to install and test our new 1999 and later LS1 wiring harness. We are looking for feedback in terms of fit and function. We prefer to have these evaluations done separately by individuals (rather than by our own engineers) because we get a more unbiased appraisal. In return for your feedback, you may keep the harness at no charge.

If you are interested, you can register here: http://painlessperformance.com/vehicles_needed.htm

It says on here that there is a $285 refundable deposit required, but we will waive that for members of LS1 Tech.

You emailed me? I don't recall. Could you contact me again? I apologize if I somehow overlooked your email. It's not a matter I consider lightly. BTW, we did send an LS1 harness to someone on this board but as far as I can see he hasn't posted a review.

I have already purchased a 98 model harness for my project. Any chance on me telling you how it works and getting a refund? Or at least a nice cushy freebie voucher.

Well I hate you didnt need any testers when I purchased mine for the "truck" version. I did purchase this and the install was flawless (almost), as I researched the different ones available this one seemed to fit the bill nicely. Two problems I had, one was the instructions gave the wrong part number for the O2 sensors a quick call to painless got me the correct number. The second part was my misreading of the instructions. The truck version has provisions for the 4l80 and 4l60 tranny, the 80 requires an "input" I pluged this into the 60 output. Once I swapped the plugs it has worked flawless ever since.
My swap was a 5.3 gen 3 swap into a 1968 chevy shortbed pickup.

So, the Painless kit is $285.00 ? Am I interpreting this correct? What is wrong with people getting a free item and then not posting about the product?

Just curious where you got the $285 from? This is what I found when I clicked the link....

Pro LS1 Wire Harness 1998 ($700.00 - Regular price) ($609.00 - Sale Price) Speed Scene Wiring

LOL I guess so. But I went back and found another harness simply listed under 'Painless EFI Harnesses' and the LS1 listed there is 499.99. So I have no idea what the other harness for 1300 could be.

He got 285 b/c the guy FROM painless posted to be a 'test' vehicle you had to pay a 285 deposit. So he thought the Painless harness was 285.

I am referring to the PAINLESS KIT, not Speed Scene. However, in post #62, AJ refers to a $285 refundable deposit for "someone" to try the kit. The "someone" also never posted about his experience, results or comments on the wiring harness.

Sorry, my bad, I wasn't aware you were talking about that particular post......it is difficult to tell when you don't quote the post. As for Speed Scene/Painless....I just clicked on the link in the post below and found what I showed here. If it isn't the same then Speed Scene is giving someone else free advertising.

am I correct in assuming that painless is gonna sell a fuel injection computer and then charge extra for the software to be able to actually use it? That is, you know, for anything other than a stock engine.

I understand why they might want or have to do this... but to me be able to tune was more than half the game. The other half was being lazy, you know, why I wouldnt want to hack a stock harness.

Either way, gonna watch this closely, I havet commited to any computer or harness or tunning software package yet... I am atleast glad to know Ill soon have more options.
