Default LS1 to mid engine design

Does any one know if u could use a LS1 out of a Vette and the C5 trans axle to make a car mid engine. Or what would I have to do to make it mid engine.

You need to give us a bit more detail of what you have in mind. Anything is possible with the right amount of skills, tools, and money. What are you wanting to make mid-engine, and why?

Like N2TRUX stated, anything is possible with enough skills and budget. The thing to know about the C5 transaxle is that the gears are in front of the stub axles. This would make for a very "cab forward setup". Also the input shaft is really long. It sticks in my head that it is something like 30" from the stub axle centerline to front of the input shaft. I would say you would be better off to go with a Porsche transaxle flipped upside down with an adapter from someone like Kennedy Engineering. The Porsche gear ratios are better too.

Well the car I want to make mid engine is a 1975 Datsun B210 Coupe. I want to make it mid engine because. I finally got sick of the anemic performance of the Sub 100 horse 4 cylinder it has in it right now. I also want to set up the car for roadracing. I figured a mid engine design would give me better weight balance than put a LS1 in the front.

There is a trans that will bolt right up to the LS1 that will work for this. It is from an earlier GM front wheel drive car . Can't remember its number, but it was only an auto. Mid engine Ls1's drive nice <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> ... At least mine does. It is a transverse mount using a getrag 282 five speed

How hard was it to swap the LS1 into the Fiero. I am wanting to mount the LS1 longitudal using a Fiero based tubular engine cradle. I was thinking of basing it off the one made by Held Motorsports. http://www.heldmotorsports.com/cradle.htm here is the website for the engine cradle. I also was thinking of using there wide track slalom kits for the suspension.

the C5 manual trans setup wont work for midengine use because the shift rod enters the case through the bellhousing, but an auto could work similar to this http://www.northvalleydesigns.com/luv/ . keep in mind the distance from engine to dif, in the Porsche transaxles (except for front-engined), the diff is right behind the bellhousing which makes for a more compact installation. also, i believe the older V6 cavaliers used the Getrag 5. good luck
