Default Cooling Fans for Hybrids?

What is the opinion's on what is the best and what is actually required to sufficiently cool the LS1. I see SPAL has a good rep. Is a shroud necessary? This will be a stock motor in the short term and possibly supercharged long term. I am using a stock 4 core radiator for a 67 camaro big block with an automatic. It cooled all 5 big blocks that the car has seen flawlessly.

Hello,
I used the fans from an LS1 Z28. I modified the plastic a little. They were $80. from a junk yard, I couldn't get that quality and durability close to that price in the aftermarket world.

Depends on the size of the radiator. If it's as wide as the LS1 Fbody, I'd just use those fans - cheap and easy. If it's a narrower radiator, such as the 80s camaro radiator I have in my car, then the 1st or 2nd gen Taurus fan works really well. There are lots of Datsun Z conversion people using this fan. One guy has a write up comparing the $50 salvage yard 2spd Taurus fan to the $200 BlackMagic fan. He claims the taurus one was way better.

The fans from either and LT1 or LS1 camaro work great. How wide is the cooling area of your radiator?

We used a single 16" SPAL fan on our Cobra with great results, but the best bang for the buck, most OEM appearing fan setup is the one I used on my Syclone.

They are available thru Ramchargers, for about $80 I believe. They sell it in kit form for $100-140 for 2 speed setup with relays and such, but you can get it for $80 for what you see in my pictures.

My Syclone is actually running too cool with these fans now, and they typically run *WAY* hot. Many TurboBuicks are running the same fans, on cars with front mount intercoolers that obstruct the radiator even.

I wouldn't hesitate using these on any LS1 project. Fans, shroud, and all, $80 is a killer deal and they flow some serious air. I had to do some cutting to the fan mounting portion, but I made it look clean. You can do some searching on turbobuick.com for dimensions to see if it will fit, or if you're really hurting, I can do some digging or measuring of my setup.

Brian,
How do you wire up those fans to run two speeds? How long have you used that fan setup?
Any reliability problems with it?
Thanks

If you look at a factory F body fan circuit, I'd wire it that way.

I know the image is corrupt, I'll upload a good version soon, but at least this gives you the idea. You may want to call Ramchargers about this, because the expensive setup should have 2-3 relays & all wiring needed to do the 2 speed setup. I just didn't have an extra output from the Syclone ECM to run 2 speeds. I may do it in the future, by using a cheap thermostat type turn on for low speed, and the ECM output for high speed (160-165 low speed on, 185 high speed on, or something like that).

No problems with the fans at all, they work great. They have been used by many TurboBuick guys with no problems that I have heard of. I've had them on the truck for several months now. Word is that they are used by some Chrysler vehicle, OEM, and they have a source to find 'em cheap to sell to the aftermarket. I didn't bother searching any more, since $80 is plenty cheap for me.

Ramchargers' fans

Might not work with your application, but I'm not sure if their measurement is from the ends of the mounts, or the end of the shroud. methinks it's the actual shroud width, I'll double check to be sure.

I got the image online from the GM service website <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> Gotsta know people. I also have the GM service CD roms, and I think they are on there.

Hey Brian my radiator cooling fin area is 17 x 23. What are the ramcharger fans? Also, how did you get the schematic in electronic form from the Helms manual? Did you scan it in or are those manuals available electronically somewhere? I only have a hard copy version.

I like that fan bgreen suggest. But how do we connect to ouyr LS engine. I have primery and secondery fan lead cable. Does this fan both work same time or can we hook them to work primery and secondary?
Thanks

I'm using the stock LS1 fans on my Astro AWD with the PCM controlling them. They operate on low speed through one relay (series) and when in high speed they operate through two relays (parallel).

I custom built a shroud from aluminum as the LS1 shroud was too wide for the stock Astro rad. Works great.

Hey there,
Any one looking at the Ramgharger fans in BGreen's post, but dont know about measurements.
I just got mine and thought I would post up the measurements.
26.5" X 15.5" these are for the shroud.
and the overall length including the mounting tabs is 31"
