Default Better to get vette ls1?

I've been searchin for Ls1/T56 combos, I dont have the money yet, but I'm getting a good idea of what I should be looking for. I want to put the combo into my 80 Formula Firebird. Should I be looking for the vette combo instead of the Fbody engine/tranny? I heard that with the Fbody setup you have to either move some of the accessories up top or notch out the subframe. Also, I was reading an article at Street & Performances webpage on an installation of ls1/t56 in a 1st gen camaro, they had to use a shortened tailshaft that placed the shifter about 2 1/2 inches foward. Is this going to be necessary with the 2nd gens also? Thanks!

Good question. I went with a 2001 TA LS1. It has the LS6 intake and no EGR like in the corvette engine. Money saved went into cam, pushrods and springs!

My frame will be notched. I am not sure if the vette LS1 eliminate the need to notch for the AC. From what I remember the ALT is the only thing up top.

Try John at speartech. He is doing my conversion.

Ya I think with the vette ls1 the ac still might be on the bottom, but with the fbody ones i think both the alt and ac are on the bottom. I dont mind having to notch the subframe, but if I find a vette engine for a good price, it would save me the time of notching. What type of car are you putting yours into? I was also wondering if I'm going to have to use a custom made oil pan?

On my 72 Camaro, I didn't have to notch the subframe for the alternator. I have the motor moved back about 3/4" from stock. I am using the S&P style motor mount plates. I dont have an A/C pump on mine though.

Also, remember that the Vette doesn't have a conventional transmission. If you're looking to get the engine and trans as a package deal, you'll be in for a heck of a lot more work with the Vette. The engines in the Vette and F-bodies are essentially the same, but where the F-body's engine goes into a transmission, the Vette's engine bolts directly to a shaft that goes to the back of the car. There in the back is a transaxle (transmission and independent rear axle in one). This is why a gear swap in a Vette is an outrageous $3000. If you're looking for a Vette motor, get the motor and get a trans from an F-body.

Good luck

Hey Lesrace, you got a website with pictures? BigE - Thats true I completely forgot the new vettes use a torque tube design, didn't think of that. In that case I will probably try to hunt down a newer Fbody ls1 and t56. What year did they start using the LS6 intake on the Fbody cars?

My conversion is a 1991 Formula Firebird. The alternator is not really a problem. There is a piece of angle iron that will have a small cut for the alternator to clear.

Part of the reason you have to notch and cut things is that the oil pan has a larger sump. If you get a vette engine you will have to get a pan from an f-body car (something I forgot to mention yesterday.)

Car looks awsome man! I love the second gen firebirds and camaros and I can't wait to get started on mine. Unfortunatly being at college and having my 'bird be my only car and lack of funds makes things harder, I really can't wait to start. Feel free to send any new pictures to bcampbell2858@hotmail.com as you take them. Also, what have have you done since the fitting of the engine? Thanks a ton!

I have the fuel system ran now, got the fuel cell mounted, Most of the wiring is done. I made a set of headers out of my old SBC headers, not realy happy with them, but they should be good enough to get the car running. Then I am thinking of buying a set of MAC headers and haveing new exhaust bent up. Then I just have a bunch of little stuff to finish up now.

Formula301, all of the 2001 and newer LS1s have the LS6 intake on them. But, don't limit yourself to only 2001 and newer, because the LS6 intake will fit on any 97-03 LS1 setup and only costs around $400 new. I'd look for a 99 or newer setup just because the valvecovers are easier to remove than the 97-98 LS1 (10 perimeter bolts vs 4 center bolts)

The only differences between the Vette and F-body LS1s are the shape of the oil pan, electronic throttle body vs cable operated, the accessory layouts, and the cam specs. Cam specs are negligible however, the C5s were just a bit different because they didn't ever have an EGR setup like the F-body and had to compensate.
