My buddy has a bit of experience with Deloreans. I think with the weight of the engine and the horsepower it brings, its not only going to seriously screw up the weight ratio, its going to destroy the frame/suspension.
Also, what transaxle are you planning on using? You cannot use the stock Delorean manual or automatics even with an adaptor plate. Odds are youre going to have to go with a Porsche or Lotus unit so thats another $5000 to shell out right there.
These are only some of the problems I know he's encountered when toying with the idea of a Delorean engine swap. Just some food for thought.

My uncle bought a low mileage Delorean in the 80's and my dad raced him in our 1980 Ford Fairmont station wagon with a stock 302 and beat him. Needless to say my uncle was not happy.
The Delorean would be a cool transplant. An expensive G50/G60 transaxle from a Porsche would be the logical choice to hold up to the power of an LS1 and provide overdrive. They can be $5-10K easy. Wouldn't be a cheap conversion to do it right... but it would be cool as hell.

Do it. If you fiqure it out and come up with a kit Delorean owners will beat a path to your door. The major problem with these cars was a lack of grunt as described by the previous posters. Besides that I'm sure you could make a profit (including your man hours) selling the car when you are done.

Man those cars have so many issues with them. I believe they use a variant of the Lotus Esprit backbone chassis, so maybe a turbocharged Ford 2.2 litre V4 would be a better swap. Or even a TT Lotus 3.5 V8.
Does the DMC also use the same Renault gearbox as the Esrpit? If so this will be a major issue as it struggles to handle the n/a 2.2 V4. But it's also the only gearbox that fitted in the Esprit. When Renault axed the gearbox Lotus had to discontinue production of the Esprit.
LS1 in a DMC = constant headache and plenty of $$$$$$$$
