Question LSx into DSM Conquest/Starion

This is another thought I had for a conversion, but I don't know of anybody that has done one. They were cool-looking cars and decent performers back in the day...

It's been talked about, but haven't seen anyone actually do it yet.

I agree, it would be a great car for the swap.

I would love to do a conquest. I've looked into it a bit but I've never found a car to start it with. there is enough room in them with some modifing with a bfh. a buddy of mine has a nice mint conquest that was nice enough to let me have his car and a lift for a couple hour's so I tried and figured most of it out. the only problem with these car's is that part's are getting harder to get for them. my buddy had to look for about 2 months before he found a place that had a upper shock mount for his car when he had to replace his. it's a cool idea and the car's weight about 2500 lbs too.

IIRC, the Conquest/Starion were only made for four years and didn't sell all that well, so I can see why spare parts would be a challenge. Still...I've always liked their looks and handling, but they weren't very reliable. My ex-girlfriend had a Conquest that puked the turbo twice before 70K miles... That's why I was thinking the swap would get rid of the reliability issues, but I'm wondering about cooling and exhaust room.

There is one locally with a Mopar 360 in it, so obviously a V8 will physically fit. I don'y know what all would be required for an LS1 swap, but I'm sure it'd be a neat ride.

cooling would have to be a bigger probly aftermarket radiator and eltric fan's. the exhaust there is room to run depending if you run header's manifold's or try trubo's long tub header's would have to be custom and would make it a little chanlleng to run exhaust but I sure it can be pulled off.

ive seen one with a small block chevy.
im sure anything is possible, but finding a core car would be a huge problem.
all ive seen are complete junk, rusted, wrecked, or the interior is ripped out of shot.

my cousin used to have a red one. she bought it new.
DANG! what a nice ride it was.

I've seen a couple on autotrader, but they are all 1000 mi away from me. If I can free up some garage space and find a decent body/interior, I might give this a try...

actually a friend of mine with one thats in great shape has mentioned that the cars are more like 3100 pounds, so, theyre definitley not lightweight. theyre fun cars and the stock 4 banger was HUGE!
http://home.netcom.com/~rvtucker/history.html has some great info on them

There was one with a built Buick Grand National (turbo V6) setup in it that ran 9's. I believe FASTTIMES Motorsports built the engine (Chuck Samuels).

I think they have good looks.... but they are no featherweights. From the factory they came with lots of rubber and good looking rims.

There was a sweet rolling chassis for sale on www.racingjunk.com for ever, but I can't find it now. It was already caged and tubbed, with some huge street radials on it...not "drag" look, more "road race" look...and I think it was set-up (with motorplate mounts etc) for an LSx based motor. I just looked again and there is only one Conquest...and it ain't the one.

That roller was on Ebay too. I think it went for about $15k. You can buy a museum quality starion for half that.

I have a buddy with 3 of them. He's currently installing a 4G63 eclipse turbo motor in it. There is apparently a kit that utilizes an RX7 trans with that motor for RWD applications. He already has a 500HP 10 second AWD eclipse, so i guess he knows how to make that motor tick. It ought to be stout.

those cars are cheap and plentiful. Dime a dozen as rollers, since the 2.6 was a POS, and 99% of them no longer run. You can get them for $500 ALL Day long most anywhere.
As far as 'never been done' I talked to a guy a few years ago who did one, and had about $30k in it (well would have been the cost,. had his dad not work in a chassis fab place) fit well, and grenaded the DSM rear) he disassembled and parted it out. The pix looked nice (don't have them anymore) and fit like a glove. Still would love to do someday (interiors were pimp as ****, and chassis hendled well 16x7 front 16x9 rear etc)
Point being, JUST DO IT!! there are always a few rollers on eBay.
