Default Pace setter headers modification

I know ite been covered as to what has to be modified to clear the steering box (yay rack and pinion i didnt have to do anything!) but what has not been covered is how to angle the drivers side header to point back not towards the side of the car, just want to make sure im not doin somethin stupid before i start cutting.

What you have to do is, cut the collector with a small cutoff wheel right behind where it's welded. Dont cut through the tubes underneath if possible. Just cut the first layer of the collector until you get all of it, all the way around, and itll slip off. Use a flap wheel on your angle grinder to smooth out the tubes, then put the collector back on, point it the way you want it to be, and weld her back on. If you wanted to, you could make all the tubes straight by heating them and bending them straight, but if you do that, you'll have to weld in a new square piece of steel between the tubes.. (i forget what it's called.) I dont think it's necessary.

here's approx where to cut the collector.

for the passenger side, if you havent got it figured out yet, here's what I did..

Note the C clamps holding the flange flush with my workbench, and the location of the wooden block.. (yes, it caught on fire, oh well..) then i've got a 3' - 3" exhaust tube thingy i picked up at autozone stuck onto the collector. I heated the tubes all the way around EVENLY so they were nice and cherry red, then pressed on (read, sat on) the pipe until it bent straight. They fit very nicely on both sides now.

nice inch of clearance all around for the passenger side. They look like they were made for the car, now =)

good luck!
btw are you the same ilovefirstgens putting a C4 IRS in a '68, as on PT?

Sweet!

Thanks for the help ill have to get cooking on that one today.
and i am the same ilovefirstgens as from PT and Lateral-g

Also why did you haveto modify the passenger side, for me it works oerfect aside from being a bit too close to the frame rail but the angle is perfect.

is it cranked down? Mine just needed to be adjusted 5 degrees or so.. had I put the 3 foot piece on it, it woulda hit the frame rail. It's perfectly paralell now.

Sweet! glad I could help. A heat shield would be more than enough, I'm just kinda picky, and bent it anyways.

67RSCamarvette,
Which car those headers made for and how low they hang on the car. My egzost in the car almost same level with the sub frame with the stock manifolds and like to get these headers. Also do you have to do anything to ?(the part that bolts to the heads. I forget what it's called). How much these pupies run for and what size pipes is for good for a stock 2001 LS1 ( but would be updated on power next year.
Thanks man

98-02 Camaro, Pacesetters offroad version. they do not hang any lower than the oil pan. You have to move the first two tubes in, the first about 5/8", the second to clear the first. Flanges. The headers cost $275. They're 1 3/4" primaries to 3" collectors. More than enough expansion room for more power. Id do it only if you're good at fabricating, as it'll take some trial and error.

I forget to mention that I have power steering box. Not rac. Is it ok?
I build the down pipes using flanges from the cats to hook up my duals to LS1 manifol.
Does that qualify me as good at fabricating?

I have power steering box as well. Ilovefirstgens, the bastard, got away with no tube modifications because he isnt running a box. The mods I listed were for a steering box.

Mods to tubes? I think I missed that part. Do you have a pick what it needs to be done or better yet if you have a driver side pick I would realy apriciate it .
Thanks

compare that to a pic of unmodded tubes, you'll see the difference. I dont have a pic. The first 2 tubes need to be moved to clear the steering box.

Olly,

Regarding the primary tubes, it looks like you cut them at the flanges, bent them, shortened them as needed and rewelded them to the flanges. Is this correct?

I was wondering if you could describe how you went about bending the primary tubes. I understand that you heated them, but aside from that if you could describe specifically how you bent them I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Jacob

did not shorten them, cut the first two at the flanges, shaved them about 1/4 of an inch at a time (on the cut side, keeping it paralell with the flange) until I got the clearance I needed. I did not have to bend or heat them, only the collectors, but i'm always a fan of persuasion using a torch, makes things alot easier sometimes.
