They are pretty "generic" when it comes to drive trains. Years ago, I knew a guy that put a 454 in one. The kits are so expensive to finish now, most folks that build them are purists'...to Ford.

Factory Five designed their kits to work with a donar fox mustangs. There have been a few ls1 and lt1 cobras and 65 coupes running around though.

My neighbor has one with a 351 Winsor that's fuel injected with a mild cam. TKO 5 speed and 8.8 rearend with 3.27 gears.

I must say that it's pretty quick however I want to know if it's going to be possible for me to beat him with my truck:
55 Chevy with LS1 - stock bottom end, 11.1 compression, Torquer II, ported TB, TSP CNC ported 5.7 heads, SSF 3500 and a 9" out back running 3.73 gears.

Will it be possible for me to run with him?

ive got a factory five car along w/ a stang w/ an ls1. You can use the ford 8.8 and have a custom DS made, it'll fit into the cobra w/ much room to spare. The way the exhaust is designed, you may even be able to just cut the flanges off the headers and be done.

I wouldn't do it... It will absolutely kill the resale IMHO, and it just wouldn't *sound* right.

That'd be what I'm doing then although not a shelby, it's a UK model from Gardner Douglas, should end up at about 950Kgs and 440BHP

What resale value?!

guys routinely take a horrilble loss on factory fives, might as well do what you want, and the ls1 would be a hell of a lot more fun to drive. And i doubt that the resale value would be any different than any other power plant of a similar cost if not better.

Its a kit-car. You can build it however you want. Nobody builds them for resale value as a first priority. They're more disposable than a classic that is no longer made. There's two where I live, one 427 BBC, and a 429 ford. Both are red with white stripes. Neat cars.

According to the FF/Cobra forums, LSx motors are becoming more popular in those cars and who the HELL builds a kit car for "resale value"?? I am sure some people do, but it isn't my cup of tea. When I do mine it will be to enjoy and drive and i don't give a f**k if anyone else likes it, thinks it "sounds" right or whatver other complaint that they may have.

My car, my project, MY choices.

I noticed they moved the tranny shifter. Most just leave it where it is. It's one of those details that always burns my ***.

Hey, that's my car.

LS1 is a great motor for a Cobra in my opinion. There's quite a growing comunity of us down here running them.

Resale would be more of an issue in the US as you tend to get more purists over there but it doesn't seem to matter down here. Not yet anyway since none of the LS1 Cobra people want to sell their cars.

I developed the shifter relocation a few years back since it's a pain to drive with a 6 speed with a traditional lean forward shifter. It's to easy to get lost in the gears and the stock shift setup is a bit ordinary performance wise.

Cheers

I also converted my Cobra to an LS1 with a 6-speed, had a Mercedes 500 engine in it before, 'cause the Mercedes V8's where already fully aluminum when GM didn't even think about the LT1, I think they built their first fully aluminum V8 back in the late 70's
I took the Mercedes out 'cause there are much more performance parts available for the LS1, if you want a Cam or a Supercharger for a Mercedes engine, you have to go to Carlson or AMG and have it Custom tailored for you, and I'm not willing to pay $12.000 for a charger or $2.500 for a cam, other than that the Mercedes was a great engine, you can go on the Autobahn and keep the rpm's at 6500 for 30min's and the engine would'nt be bothered at all....
