Default Truck 5.3 HP question

If I remember correctly the 5.3 (2000-2006) puts out 285 stock hp. I'm dropping one into a 59 Suburban. If I remove all the smog crap with an inexpensive exhaust what will I gain?

Most of the HP ratings are based on the tune of the computer through out the differant years. So an aftermarket tune remove EGR post 2003 models don't have EGR anyway and no cats. 300HP easy!

Basically, the more air you flow through it, the more power it makes, provided you can keep up with the fuel supply. A free flowing exhaust.. (COUGH, longtubes) will really help, maybe 15-20hp, a good intake (ls6), port its TB, a good tune to delete all the crap, and lean it out a bit, and youre over 300, i'm guesstimating somewhere around 325-340 ponies at the crank. A cam in the future will really wake it up.

How does removing the EGR help power?

My 2001 5.3L has a 120thousand miles on it and a performance tune from www.wait4meperformance.com on it in my 85 El Camino with 2001 camaro exhaust manifolds and cats, and a 4l60e trans. It put out 253hp and 278fp at the wheels on a dynojet chassis dyno.

EGR contaminates the intake charge with hot, burned gasses. helps fuel economy someitmes, but generally decreases power some.

Removing the EGR won't help power. It only operates at cruising speeds. When you get on the gas it shuts off. You can actually damage an engine if you delete the EGR because of high combustion temps. Today's smog controls have almost no effect on max power.

So, you're implying that EGR helps to lower combustion temps. How does it do that?

The EGR only has an effect at part throttle, it introduces burnt gasses into the combustion chamber, which displaces oxygen, because the burnt gasses do not contain oxygen they cannot burn again so there is less material burning in the chamber which lowers the combustion temps. I thought that that was the reasoning behind EGR valves, they lower part throttle combustion temps to reduce the production of oxides of nitrogen. But an EGR valve only contaminates the intake charge at part throttle which is why I was wondering how eliminating it could increase power at WOT .

The new truck motors since 03 don't have EGR valves anymore! It won't hurt the motor. Just retune for the removed EGR
