Default Alternator wiring question

about to start the notch and noticed i forgot to connect the ls1 alternator.
i have the positive terminal ( thick wire) going ot the junction block but the small lead wire is just dangling there.
where is that wire supposed to go? is it a "alt. charging" warning light lead?

any idea where is the old alt. small wire supposed to be on a '92 fox harness??

Is the small wire that is hanging a brown wire that goes to terminal L of the alt? Also what year computer/wiring are you using? I believe that only the 98 computers don`t control the alt, if it is 99 or newer you can just connect it to the computer. If it is a 98 then you need to connect the brown wire to an ignition hot wire through either a 500 ohm 1/2 watt resistor or through a small light bulb (ie: a 194 style light).

thanks guys,

G-body, the alternator i'm using is not an Ls1 specifiic alt. as far as i know. ( ls1 alt's are in such high demand here ( they are pricey - around $420 to $480 new) that you can't even find them in junk yards). so the one i have is a gm one as far as i know but it has a two wire connector , one goes to the positive terminal on the batt and the other just has a wire hanging waiting to be connected.

the wiring harness i have is a speartech unit and doesn't seem to have a wire to connect to the alt.

so could this wire be the trigger for the charge light?

I think the second wire is the trigger for the charge light. Does the alt have a 2 wire connector and a main post on the back? If it does then the wire that is hanging is for the charge indicator. If not, I have not seen a GM alt like it yet.

its like you mentioned, the hanging wire it for the charge light.

anyone know where the charge light wire on a '92 foxbody would be?

I'd second that after looking at the '98 harness I have. There are no wires in this harness for the truck style (2003 145 amp in my case) alternator, which in addition to the large output wire has three other wires. The engine harness only has the one red wire for the alternator, and it appears it should be connected to a warning light of some sort via plug C220A. The GM LS1 engine swapping manual on page 34 shows the three small wires as well, which indicates '98 was a unique year.

Check out Turbomustangs.com for help with Fox body questions- they are a helpful bunch, and even have a GM section on their forum.

All Speartech harnesses include the alternator wiring unless the harness didn't have it to start with (some reworks), or the customer does not want it in there in the first place (new harness).

Now wait a minute. In one thread you're running a Speartech harness and in another thread you're running a TPIS harness.
