Default Ls1/t56 in a e39 5 series?

Hey guys,

I have a 98 528I with a auto tranny. I just finished paying it off and I was thinking about the ls1/t56 swap. I have seen the kit for the e36, but I'm not sure that would fly in the e39. Any tips on what to look out for and how much everything including labor would be, would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Tom

Bill Hagen built one and there's a link to his website. Everything was custom fabricated since no kits are available, so look at spending quite a bit of cash and or time if you decide to go through with it. Good luck.

Holy ****...

Thanks for the link

I can't get that many details on how much work it was though, because the links on the page don't work.

The only other thing I know about the guy is he built the LT1 RX7 in the following link. He used to post over at torquecentral occasionally, but I don't think I've seen him around recently. You might be able to contact him and get info about it, but I'm sure you'll be doing a lot of trailblazing on your own if you decide to go through with the swap.

I put one in an e12 and and e21. It really isn't too bad if you have a MIG welder and a plasma cutter.

i have thought about doing this swap. I think it would be a bit easier than the e30 or e36 swap because these cars had the option of a v8 from the factory so there is a bit more room in the engine bay. you might luck out and not have to change the location of the stock brake booster and mAster cylinder like i have to do on my e30. best of luck with the swap...

Thanks for the replies guys, sounds like it shouldn't be too bad. Anyone have a range for parts and labor, I want to have all the money and parts upfront, so it can be completed in a couple days.

This isn't he kind of swap that can be done in a couple of days. You might want to reconsider unless a few months (minimum) will be OK with you. The only way you're going to get a complete and functional LS1 swap into your 5 series in a few days is if your car gets "stolen" and put on Overhaulin'.

Default one thing...

Does the 540 have a rack and pinion or a steering box? On the e12 I had to rip out the steering box and put in a e30 rack and pinion to make it work.

A couple days???? If you have the funds necessary to hire the team big enough to tackle a project like this in a couple days, you wouldn't be considering the swap in the first place Conversions typically take in the "weeks to months" timeframe, so prepare yourself for that. It all depends on what level of a conversion you're wanting to do as well.

I could drop an LS1 in a Mustang and have it driving in a weekend, but it would be a somewhat rough conversion. Tidying everything up and making everything work properly (gauges, for example) takes extra time.
