Default priming the gen III

before i start the 5.3 in my swap, is there a good way to ensure that everything islubed before the initial start up since most of us doing swaps use salvage yard motors that knowone knows how long they have been sitting

Default Priming

I Usually Just Hold The Throttle Wide Open, (the Computer Will Not Let It Start) And Crank Several Times Untill Oil Comes Up Through Pushrods, And Drips Down Onto Retainers And Springs. Then You Are Good To Go.

I cranked mine a couple seconds but did not get any oil pressure. I just started it up and oil pressure came right up.

I cranked mine for 30 seconds and watched the oil pressure gauge, like a friend told me, and the needle never moved. I shut it down and i was totally worried that something was wrong. I called SLP because i had installed one of their ported oil pumps. He said the gauge will never move from cranking it. He said start it up and watch the gauge, if it doesn't shoot up above 40 psi in five seconds, shut it down. I fired it up tonight and the gauge immediately shot up past 50 psi.

I heard of some one using a hand pump-up sprayer will oil. And blowing it into a fitting, at the oil cooler lines in the block, to primp the sytem then starting the engine.

I use the hand pump method, I made a fitting to thread into the sender port on the top/rear of the block, then with the valve covers off I just pump oil slowly through the system until I stop getting air bubbles from the pushrods and everything gets oiled. About every 2-3 minutes I rotate the crankshaft a bit to change lifter position. When I fire the engine I get no lifter rattle (from empty lifters) and immediate oil pressure like it was just run. This method takes a little time, is easier to perform while on the engine stand but I think it's worth it.

Ive found the LS1 engine to be a bitch to prime, if you remove the oil adaptor fitting above the oil filter, you loose 1/2 litre of oil.
It usually takes me around 15-20 seconds of cranking before oil pressure builds up again.
So each oil filter change I prime engine for 15-20 seconds til there's pressure, first time it happened I was so worried, no psi.
