Default What is everyone doing for power steering hoses?

One of the last things I need to do, is have my power steering hose go from the LS1 pump to the 1970 steering box. Every "hydraulic hose" shop I go to says they don't make power steering hoses. If i'm not mistaken, the threads on the pump are metric and the threads on the box are pipe threads. Does anyone sell a hose like this?

You can make them yourself with "power steering hose" and fittings from any of the regular sources. The hose is high pressure teflon stainless braided, like nitrous lines. Pick up the metric to AN adapters, and the pipe to AN adapters, and the stuff to make your lines.

I have a Nova front clip in my Studeabaker. I took the hose ends from the old steer box and the new steering pump to a hose shop and told them a I needed hoses however many inches long with these type of fittings on the ends. I had them put a swivel fitting on the box end of the pressure hose that locks into position once it is tightened. When it was all done it cost me nearly $50 but they work perfect.

I cut of the pump end of the '02 F-body hose and let a shop mate it with my old hose. Worked with no problem.

For the pressure side, I cut the flare off the LS1 PS pipe and removed the metric fitting. I then inserted a 5/8-18 fitting and made another double flare. For the return side I bought a new hose from napa for a 71 camaro. I cut it to the needed length and clamped it to the PS reservoir. It worked flawlessly and cost...$14 for the return hose and $1.59 for the fitting. You can rent the flare tool from autozone

when I make hoses I cut off the ends mock up the hose with fuel line and take it to a hose builder ( I use napa) but never tell them it's for steering...
It's a liability thing so don't ask don"t tell
good luck

I definitely wouldn't trust fuel line to the pressures found in a power steering system

If you take a look in my pictures in this thread:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-swaps/532488-my-ls1-69-z-28-a.html

Under the intake hose you'll see a aluminum tube with a flange on. That is the PS oilcooler. Some of the F-bodies has it, mine came from an 2002 SS. Its pretty simple the return line goes in through this cooler on its way back to the pump.

It does not hurt to have it. You can also get an inline power steering filter from Napa and put it in the line. It fits inside the hose.

How hot does PS fluid actually get? I didn't think it got that hot, but I guess I might be wrong.

if you get a late model metric steering box, like what the later 3rdgens have, the stock 4thgen hose screws right into it.
so if you want to upgrade to a quick ratio 12:1 box, and its close enough that the 4thgen hoses reach, you can just bolt on a later model box... just an idea.

Lightbulb Any local hydraulics shop...

that fabricates hydraulic lines & that is a Eaton-AeroQuip dealer, sells the steering box adapter fittings & hose & hose ends. Pretty common stuff in the book. Gar

If you are turning a lot, especially in "demanding" situations (ie. lots of turns in the parking lot, high loads at high speeds, etc.), it can heat up quite a bit. Consider that GM installed a cooler that used engine coolant to cool the power steering.

Yeah that's what made me think it must be pretty damn hot if the coolant can cool it off.

On the older types of P/S pumps, you know where the fillerneck was soldered on, the oil has been so hot that the soldering has melted!! This is in extreme racing when doiing a lot of hard turning.

We have an amazon hose & rubber her in Orlando. After lookin at their site I found this hose:

Do you think this will work well? What size should the PS lines be?
