Pics of a 71 SS Chevelle about to get LSX'ed
Car just got dropped off today, about to recieve a plethora of late model goodies.
I did the paint and bodywork a few years ago, and the owner has only put 4,000 miles on it since the paint job, partly because it's slow and drinks gas. The car is Electron Blue with pearl white stripes. It's straight as an arrow and slick as glass.
It's got a 454 with a cam upgrade, Hooker LTs, the usual carb and intake, bling bling billet accy. drive, 700R4, blah blah blah... It got beat by a stock 05 GT automatic, and gets single digit fuel economy.
So out with the old, in with the new. It's getting a built 346 LS1 T56 with Patriot LS6 heads, Trex cam, Hooker LSX LTs, LS6 intake, 30lb injectors, TB, pulley, new clutch, 4.10s for the old 12 bolt, all LS1 brakes, AC conversion....
I'll post up progress pics in the upcoming weeks as we work on it.

Chris,
For us chevelle guys, let us know what you did for the standard swap issues:
1) mounts that you used
2) if you cut the trans tunnel - and how much...
3) oil pan mods
4) accessories used
5) which headers you used (chevelle or camaro)
Thanks and good luck with the project!!!

At the risk of sounding stupid I am going to ask anyhow. Couldn't you get alot more power moding the 454 than from the whole LS1 swap? The reason I am saying this is because I know how much work the swap is. Now if you were going to a LS7 then that would be a different story.

I am too wondering like bczee, does it have the original LS6 454 in it? If so I personally would keep it original as looking at the condition of the car I am pretty sure it is worth a decent chunk as it sits.

I can tell from the pics its not numbers matching so no worries there. For the above questions, if its not about cost, why upgrade the current motor, its what everybody else does. ls1/t56 is a rare and very cool conversion, the car will be fast, fun, reliable, different, and still get 20mpg with the a/c on if driven like a grandpa.
Can't wait to see the final results. Be sure to take pics along the way so we can see whats involved

Mor or less the swap was easy to do, it took some time but it wasn't too bad. I didn't need to cut the fire wall at all. I have a LS1 and a 4L60E I put 4:11s in the car but i think if I did it over, I would put 3:73s in it. The car frys the tires a little much. I am working on the suspencion this year and hope to make it hook better soon. As for the gas milage it will be much better then the BB the car looks great!

You can definately get some horsepower from a modded 454 big block. These are the downsides.
1. Miserable gas mileage. This thing has 3.42s and a 700R4, and barely cracks into the double digits MPG on the HIGHWAY
2. Heavy as hell. Even with AL. heads (which this one does not have) The weight adversely affects handling and braking.
3. Old tech. Means leaky gaskets and main seals, crappy old style paper gaskets that need to be scraped off when repairing/modding, smelly, pump-it-to-get-it-started carburetor, annoying old style distributor... I can go on and on.
Think I'm I bit biased?
We are using the Hooker mounts and swap headers. The oil pan doesnt need to be modded with a rear steer, at least it shouldn't.. anyway. I know we're going to have to section the trans tunnel for the T56, I'll post pics as we go. All F body accessories. I plan to notch the frame to keep the stock AC compressor, and adapt it to the original AC. I'm going to try and talk the customer into a Vintage unit, and smooth the firewall... we'll see. This is a big $$ pill to swallow all at once.
The car is an original BB car, but I think it was a 402.. I'm not sure.
The LS1 is cool, but once it's all up and running , then other Gen III swaps are easy to do, like if he wants to try an LS2 stroker, or L92 stuff..etc.
