Default Help on starting a swap

Well here it is...
I've been reading this conversion forum and other ls1 conversions and have wanted to do one myself but I think it would be too far of an overwhelming project for me to do. I have the funds to do it but at 16 I don't have much more than basic car mechanic experience. This will be a project which I'd like to finish within 6 months

I would just like to learn a lot more about doing a swap and was wondering if you guys could suggest some general swap information. I was thinking of either doing an rx7 , second gen camaro , or like a 911 swap but i think the porsche would be way too hard even though I'm favoring that one the most.

Thanks,
Dennis

There is a ton of info for an RX7 swap at the link below. I did my RX7/LS1 swap with about the same experiece level as you. If you do a search on the
link below most of your questions will be answered. For an LS1/RX7 swap the big issues are the radiator/fan , clutch master, engine/tranny mounts, battery relocation and drive shaft. The mounts and drive shaft can be had for a reasonable price from www.hinsonsupercars.com. The stock wiring harnes can be used. Not all that many wires to hook up.

What are some of the more common small car swaps that require no fabrication?

Would it be an okay project for a beginner mechanic to put the ls1 / t56 into an old ford mustang...

I know you'd have to change the mounts and stuff but would everything else pretty much work?

I don`t think there are any swaps that require no fabrication, but there are swaps that you can buy basically all the fabricated parts for. To swap an LS1 into a 3rg gen camaro you can buy the engine and trans mounts, you could buy an A/C compressor bracket to use the stock 3rd gen A/C comp and then you wouldn`t have to have custom A/C lines made. I think a 3rd gen f-body would be the closest you could get to something with no fab. If you get a EFI 3rd gen you can reuse the fuel tank, lines, sender, you just replace the fuel pump.

For an older mustang swap you would need mounts and a trans crossmember (as far as I know no one sells these premade) You would need to figure out a throttle cable and trans linkage setup. You would need to plumb it for high pressure fuel lines and have a tank made for fuel injection with baffels or us a "Tanks INC" fuel pump setup.

Okay well my next question is...how would I go about smogging a 3rd gen camaro with the ls1? An Rx7 would be pretty much along the same lines? meaning I could buy all of the fabricated parts already made?

Smog depends on where you live, california you need to keep all the LS1 smog parts and get an underhood inspection. Illinois doesn`t look under the hood and you would have no problem passing even if you deleted a lot of the smog stuff. For the 3rd gen camaros you can buy all of the major parts already made. You might have to make some small brackets IE: the computer mount, but all the major stuff is available premade.

If you go the RX7 route, there is a lot of info on smog legal swaps on V8RX7.com

Do you think it would be that big of a project for me (as inexperienced as I am) to build a smog legal rx7 swap if I learn and research it enough? I really want to do this...I stay up a lot thinking about it all and how I would go about it all. I'm really excited about this. lol

Also, I want a 1993 + rx7 if I am going to do the swap...How much do you think I could get one without the tranny/ engine?

Given that your idea of "research" appears to be limited to asking vague questions here, rather than searching and reading, I'd say it would be "that big of a project for you."
