ls1 n00b here and i have a quick question
we will be putting a 2000 LS1 with 460LE auto tranny into our 1936 Chevy Coupe soon. I know that the harness is going to have to be tweaked, but will the computer also need to be reprogramed in order to get it to run. I have been searching for a while and cant figure this out.
thanks

Depending on your budget and ultimate goal you can rework the stock harness, or have a custom one built from scratch. If you are patient, meticulous and have a some knowledge of auto electronics you can do it yourself. Lots of help available here for that, Check the FAQ stickies at the top of the page.
I had Speartech build one from scratch and was able to sell the stock harness that came with the motor for almost enough to make up the difference between having it modified and having the new one built. With a new one, you get only what you need and it is finished very cleanly. Also any special lengths that you need can be built into it. I also had Speartech redo my computer. The beauty of having it all done that way was once I hooked it all up, it fired and ran on the first turn of the key. There are a few folks on here with street rod type conversions, feel free to check out my project journal in my sig. Also do a seach on screen name Oscar Will, he has a sweet '35 Ford sedan. I believe he used a GM offroad harness and ECU in his.
Good luck and show us some pictures!

like stu said, its all about what your going to do with in the end. on my first lsx conversion i had the harness rewired for a 98 camaro ecm. then i found a vin for a 98 camero with an 4l60 went to the dealer for 80 bucks and had it programed it fired up for me on the first try. the vats was part of the harness, so i didnt have to do anything else. that one runs fine as a daily driver.

Here is a thread of a forum member putting a 6.0 into a 39 Chevy, might be useful to search for his posts too.

Just finished this exact conversion,, only into a 36 sedan,, we used a S& P harness, a modified fuel rail from S&P , sent them my old puter and they reprogramed it , about 12 , 13 hundred bucks for everything,, fired right up and runs great

Nice looking car BADRAT! Those do tuck in there nicely. I have been trying to convince my dad to put one of these in his 37' Chevy Pick-up. At the moment it is carburated. One of these days I will bring him around to fuel enjection.
Where did you mount the computer? Are the coil pack relocated or just under the beauty covers? I can't believe how low that sits in there. Looks like there is a ton of room under the hood now! Are you running AC? I couldn't tell by the pics.
And good luck 36chevycoupe. It will be a good project and a lot of fun once complete!

I love this!!! When I first started my LS-1 install it was 1998, and practically NO ONE was doing anything with the LS-1. Since then quite a few builders have embraced this powertrain for what it is......good power, great economy and overall a great swap. I have many thousands of miles on mine and it still returns more "smiles per mile" than anything I've ever owned! My L92 is close to completion now so I'll post more info on that as it becomes a reality. You have a real winner there "36chevycoupe"!!!!!!!!!

Actually I raised the motor up about 3 " so nothing would be hanging below the frame, also so the alt. and air compresser would clear the frame,, the coil packs are still there just covered up,, the only real problem I had was getting the air filter to clear the radiator,, and that wasn't a major hurdle,, it does have AC and used the stock compressor, the computer is located in the passenger side kick panel, with the wiring coming out behind the engine and then down along the dr side frame to the front of the motor,, well hidden,, actually it was avery easy conversion, and fired up on the first spin,, actually 2nd spin,, we had the fuel lines crossed and it had no fuel pressure,
I plan on putting a LS6 in my wifes 51 chev H/T,, I have been playing with cars for 50 years and this is the best conversion engine I have ever came across,, hands down,,
Oscor Will,, you are right about the benifits of the electronics age,, and the engine management systems for hybred conversions has certainly came a LONG ways towards making it so much easier for us hotrodders,, wasn't much conversion stuff around in 98,, had to figure it all out for ourselves,
maybe thats why its catching on so heavy now,, Bill

I'm looking into a 30's hot rod rolling chassis right now, figured an early 30's Chevy...
My questions:
1. Motor mounts?
2. Oil pan, is it custom?
3. Based on the location of using a T350 trans, did the motor fit pretty well to keep it level or did you have to raise or lower it?
4. Using shorty headers or custom or ???
I would think the other stuff would be straightforward.

This thread is almost 7 1/2 years old, but anyway, it depends on what kind of suspension you want to run. The Mustang II or one of its many derivatives should work. Crossmembers don't usually get in the way on early cars since the front axle centerline is usually further ahead of the engine than in later model cars.

Looking to swap this excellent 1939 Chevy 4dr body and I'm asking what's the best swap for it. I really appreciate all the advice I can get. Thanks in advance

Corvette engine mounts work really well in old cars. Since the axles are forward enough the mount pads can be situated right behind the crossmember and the Corvette engine brackets are among the cleanest looking type of mount. Oh yes...they work really well too since the Corvette cushion is an oil filled/dampened device.
