Default lsx foxbody - motor plate vs. aje tubular

been checkin in to the whole fox ls1 and came across alot of people using motor plates instead of aje tubular k with ls1 mounts. Is there any secret that make the swap easier with the plates vs. the tubular? I have found numerous sites with the plates and it seems to be the cheapes route. In addition keeping the stock fox k using a plate could you not slightly raise the motor (if nothing hits) to clear the oil pan? also without having the mounts it seems that header clearence would the difference in night and day using 351 headers with ls1 flanges. Any input would be a great help before dropping 4 hun in a tubular k.

Its really a choice of goals and personal preference. Both methods (and others) work, just have to decide for your car. You're absolutely right about having a lot more room for headers with motor plates though, but you're also solidly mounting the engine to the frame of the car. That's fine if its a track car, or you don't mind the vibration in a street car.

I am still confused about this also..

Does AJE make a Xmember with LS1 mounts or are people using an AJE Xmember with reg. chevy mounts and using the motor plates with that?

Thanks

People adapt. As far as I'm aware, AJE does not make an LS1 swap k-member.

aje does make to tubular (http://ajeracing.com/mustang.htm) how much vibration would there be with a solid motor? ive been in a few cars with solid mounts and it didnt seem too bad. is it close to the same or does the plate make a difference?

Which one of those has LS1 mounts? They make SBC K-members, but those still have to be adapted...

FWIW, My LS1 Mustang has an AJE K member as well, but its a regular 4.6L 1996-1998 "Y2K member" (MS-3020). I am using modified 4.6L motor mounts, and I have plenty of oil pan clearance.

from my understanding i was under the impression ls1 mounts with the tub k would bolt right up? so even with the aje k you still need the 4.6 mounts with a cut and rewelded 3rd tab? motor plate is sounding more and more the way to go.

The LS1 mount looks nothing like a Ford mount, so no - it doesn't bolt straight up.

4.6l mounts are almost the same as ls1 mounts, just need to be cut n rewelded and 2 holes enlarged. after modifieing itll bolt into the 4.6l k member

What if you made a adapter plates for LS1 to the 4.6 k-member? Would you still have more clearance than the sbc/fox kmember?

Just a thought..

I am in the process and can tell you strait up what works and what doesn't work..

AJE 4.6 K-member
STOCK 4.6 motor mounts with the 3rd mounting location (single side) need to be extended about 1". Bolts right up.

Plenty of pan clearance, I am using a manual rack so i have plenty of clearance. Hope this helps..

Exactly -- 4.6L modified mounts are a very easy way to go. The only caveat, is some iron blocks don't have the rear-most bolt hole, so it won't work on those.

Here's my mounts:

Most people use the stock crossmember, but it depends on transmission choice also. Some of the longer trannys won't bolt up to the stocker so you have to get creative.

I went a little overboard on my car, built a completely new transmission crossmember setup that ties into the frame, chair rail, and rocker panels. I completely removed the factory mounts, and made the trans crossmember a structural component of the car.

I am doing the swap for my 93 coupe. I order a AJE k-memmber for sbc motor and i bought a mount kit they sale for ls1 to mount into sbc mounts that people use to put ls1 or 6.0 in early model pick-ups.

This is what I am thinking, I have a fbody pan that may work out, I assume the truck pan is what has been used from what I have seen so far, or maybe one of the swap pans would help. Let me know how this goes, what is your time frame..?

i have the AJE Kmember in mine, you just flip the mounts for the LS1. the only issues iv'e had is that the motor sits too low and the oil pan hits the rack(had to use spacers on the motor mounts) and the motor mount on the drivers side interferes with the steering shaft on my flaming river manual rack(i dont know if its the same with all racks?)
