Crankshaft Pulley Removal

Crankshaft Pulley Removal Does anyone have any tips on removing the Crankshaft pulley bolt? I have tried a breaker bar, impact wrench, and everything else I could think of, but can't break it loose. I don't think it has left handed threads, am I wrong?

Its a regular thread.
You can increase the torque of your impact gun by filling it full of oil. Turn it so the hose connection is facing up and start pouring oil in it with the trigger pulled. Once you get a couple table spoons in the gun, let go of the trigger and then fill it up till it cant take any more oil. Attach the hose with the connection still facing up and keep it that way while attempting to remove the bolt. You may want to cover the air outlet of the gun with a rag to keep the oil from spraying in your face. Increasing the air pressure to the gun will also help.

We ended up having to use a cheater bar. (Thats a peice of pipe that can fit over the breaker bar so that you end up with a 3-4 foot handle. Once you get enough leverage it will break loose.
Just make sure you have the crank and engine stand secure so nothing but the bolt can brake loose. My first time I almost flipped the motor over cause the motor stand was giving up before the bolt

I'm not sure how often you take of crank pulley's but chain wrench's work fantastic for holding the pulley.

long pipe on a long breaker bar.. I used one of them tools what are designed to fit into the balancer three opening and also used a long pipe on it.. help to have two people... one holding and one turning. Same pipes to turn it back on the 140 degs..

I used an early Ford tire iron/pry bar that has a jog in it which fit nicely into the spokes of the balancer. 18" breaker bar, and mine came right off, though the motor was on an engine dolley. If your motor in in the car, then it is very likely you'll need to add some cheaters to the tools.

Thanks for the tips. The motor is on an engine stand. I made a bracket out some angle iron and bolted it to the back. It hits the stand to keep the motor from turning. So far, I tried a 3' cheater bar (my wife had a hard time keeping the stand from flipping). and two different impact guns (one rated 450 ft-lbs in reverse). I will try again tonight and update then.

Yeah.. I almost tipped mine over once too.. my pipe was 5 ft.. didn't even strain to lossen it too much. but had to have helper keeping the engine right side up and hold the other balancer tool.
