I am pre-planning a possible project and wanted to know what kind of power would it take to get a 5000lb car into the high 12's low 13's?

 

er 6.0 with a big cam spray and a high stall lol. honestly i dont know but im sure any h/c/s combody with a nice stall would get you some solid times.

Those things weigh 5,000 lbs?!!! I knew they were big and heavy, but damn. You must be planning to totally load it with leather and everything. I always that it would be cool to put a modern FI motor in an old cruiser car like that. Good luck!

Or a late model FI Mustang motor with a procharger.

 

If your going that heavy how about a turbo diesel? Theres a place called longs performance that always advertises in the illinois auto-rv trader with powerstroke, duramax and cummings complete engines that are new or were EPA test motors.

The bottom ends are plenty strong, just crank up the boost and dump some more fuel in. I read in one of the magazines about a programmer from someone on the west coast that turned up the boost and fuel on a turbo duramax and it was running 12`s in the 3/4 or 1 ton truck that it was in.

 

Learn from the Impala SS Crowd...4400 pounds for an Impala SS (94-96 vintage) and there's LOTS of guys with "stock" LT1's running mid 13's with good drivetrain work and intake/exhaust bolt ons...get into the station wagon crowd (caprice wagon) and you're up to like 4800 pounds and you see them with heads/cam and the same other bolt ons running LOW 13's (and one in the high 12's that I know of)...thats only 200 pounds away (so figure 2 tenths)...meanwhile another guy I know has a stock heads, TR224 cam 2002 LS1 and T56 in his 4300 pound Caprice sedan and he's seen like 12.3's at 111 mph...so I'd say a good heads/cam package on an LS1 and a highish stall converter, good gear and you should be all set...or T56 it and practice launching

 

Forged 351W stroked to 408 with a 250 shot ought to do it.

 

When I read this question one guy in particular came to mind...John Melvin. I first saw him in a Chevy HP magazine on a Vortech ad. He is all over the web with his 2003, 5600lb, full size extended cab Chevy truck. He turns something around 11's in the 1/4. Supercharged 700 horse 6.0 and he can smoke all four tires.

So here again we see that, "if you got the money almost anything is possible."

900 ci Ford they're running in tractor pulls

 

Check the Silverado truck forum. There are quite a few of those running 12s and 13s. And they are pushjing a pretty big box through the air too.

Thanks for the comments. I was thinking of something in the LSx family like a turbo 427, but may have to use something in the Ford family.

And I am really thinking of converting to a T56.

 

I see no problems with getting enough power out of a LSx. A 6.0L and a couple turbos will push it no problem, just ask Parish.

I thought I would throw out the idea of a diesel since I know they can make enough power, you could get a ford turbo diesel and keep the car all for, plus it would be unique

 

03/04 pullied cobra motor with gm spec t56? that would be pretty cool. except id probably want a 5.4..hmm..

 

I'm with you on the diesel idea in a boat that size/weight. Interesting project though, keep us posted.

 

Here's a pic of an LT1 motor installed in a Jeep. It has a freon/air intercooled vortech blower. It pulls the front tires! Right at 550 HP.

Something like this would work fine.

 

How much larger are the duramax motors than a ls series? any way to fit it into a first gen f-body?
