Default Quick question about chassis.

If you remove the front chassis from a 68 Camaro, do you have to take it to a body frame shop for alignment? I get different answers and just wanted to know what other people have done. Removing the front piece to either get it powdercoated or just repaint it with POR-15.

Yes and No.. Yes If you suspect that is is not square any more or has been bent.. then take it to a frame shop. If it look ok and measure good to spec's... then no..

You can check to make sure your sub-frame is square by measuring crosswise, You can also check the spec in you Factory manual.

They also suggest that you mark or drill some location holes so that you can make sure as you re-assemble it, that it goes back in the same location on the Body (critical if you want to be straight agian)

There are some location holes (5/16?) right next to the bolts below the fire wall. Still take measurements to insure its square.

I always pay attention to the removal of the subframe, if you have difficulty removing any of the bolts or it goes "boinggg!" when you remove them.....it's tweaked.

The good news is you should be able to find another subframe and work on it as you drive around with a old one.. a $100-$200 or so for a good used one..with part to spare.

if it went straight before then it wll go straight after you re bolt it. BUT if you are doing the paint work why are you not rebuilding the front end?

Whoa, I didnt know you could get a subframe for around a $100 bucks! Yesterday I took crosswise and lengthwise measurements from both sides. I tested loosening the bolts and they seem to budge without much trouble. The front end is getting new bushings, springs, spindles, shocks, steering linkages, gearbox, etc... I was only going to put new spindles and springs and somewhere along the way I wound up here! By the way, the lower control arm ball joint stud keeps spinning, does anyone know of a way to keep it from spinning?

Are you taking about once the lower ball join is inserted into the spindle...? try inserting a pry bar or a ball join fork between the spindle and the A-Arm or ball join and apply pressure (pushing them appart) as you tighten the nut. Once the Stud get seated with enought pressure.. it will stay put..

You can also try tapping the spindle down on to the Ball Join to see if the Stud will seat and lock in place (not to much force tho..)

Removing the lower ball joint was a pain in the ***. Had to take out the two big bolts that connect the control arm to the sub frame, then take the control arms still connected to the spindle to work and take out the castle nut using a vise and an impact. I hope I never have to do that again!
