my lift out 5.3 came with a complete harness so I just sent it to speartech to have it modified. Super easy hookup. once I had everything bolted in, I spent a couple hours routing the harness, hooking everything up, only a few wires you have to wire yourself, and it started right up; first turn of the key. I'll definitely use them again if I do another swap. Well worth the money. I've made my own harness before for other motors but this was worth it to save my time and not have to chase down wires.

What harness you need depends mostly on what you are putting it into. If it's going into a late model car and you need it to interface and connect to the vehicles existing harnesses. You need to either modify it yourself or pay big bucks to have a custom one made for your application. If it's going into a older vehicle like a muscle car then one of the generic and basic harnesses will do just fine as the stock engine in those type car was only connected to the body by 5 to 6 wires tops.
I installed a 2002 LS1 in my 94 Z28. I got diagrams and pin-outs for both and modified the harness for a direct pug in. It works great, and only took 4-5 hours to do. I also removed all unnecessary things I din not plan on using to clean it up a bit. While this was failry simple compared to other swaps the concept is still the same.
What are you putting an LS1 into?

I put a 2000 into my 95 and wired it up yesterday. Took me about 3 hours to get it all wired up using the stock connectors. Everything looks great and works just like it should. Wow I am glad I didnt send mine off to be done .

i was putting a 6.0 liter and a t56 in a v6 car that was auto i got a custom harness from a non sponser that my soon to be father in law is a dealer for got 25% off of it too. but i have to go in and rewiire my ac under the hood and alt and e fans. i thaught the harness was gonna have that stuff. but he is gonna come up and rewire the car with me so its not that bad, but if i had it to do over again i would look in to moddifying the harness i had which i sold cause im not as smart as i thought i was. anyway long story short do your homework and find out what will work for you. if you can modify an existing ls1 harness i say do it.

Stock wiring harness question
If I am deleting AC, the airbags, and the Radio, is it OK to just take out the wiring that is connected to them? Will I set codes that will effect the way the car runs? This is a strip only car and I am trying to get rid of all of the stuff that doesn't really matter. The car is in the signature, Thanks for any help.

i just got done installing my custom harness from speartech. it was AWESOME, perfect harness, no complaints at all.
the wires were the length i needed them, unlike painless.

I have hardwired and used painless units, Wiring your own is not a bad option but in most cases require a lot of rework to look really clean. I personally don't like seeing the ecm or wiring so the stock length sucks, but it's doable. If you use a painless I suggest the extra length unit, I like to drill the hole right above the transmission so that all wires seem to disappear behind the engine.

i heard that the painless harness is mainly for complete emissions i also just sold a stock harness to a member that had his stock harness cut by a reputable company and is having problems i purchased my harness new built to my exact specifications for $500 however it was from a nonsponsor(i guess) and it is extremely well built

Painless isn't a bad route to go depending on what you are doing. If you are integrating the LS1 harness into a existing chassis harness then modifying the stock harness or having speartech or others make you one is the way to go. I'm working on my 3rd swap now and I'll tell you that modifying the harness yourself isn't super hard if you have the proper skills and tools. Just takes time. If you are starting all over with new fuse panels ect ect like I am on the current project then the painless route is the best one.
