Default LS1 To Tremec

A few questions about this swap. I am wondering if the stock flywheel, clutch and pressure plate off of an LS1 will work with the Tremec transmission. Are they the same spline count?

Thanks for any help and opinions.

What kind of Tremec? The T56 is a Tremec, but there are other kinds like the T5, and TKO600.

I guess it would help if I included more details. The transmission I have is a Keisler TKO 500. I only have about 5000 miles on it and want to use it with my setup. The motor I have came with a flexplate and I need to pick up a flywheel. Just trying to make sure before I buy.

I am not sure of the spline count other than an LS1 with a T56 is fine splined, but it can work as long as your bellhousing will house the big flywheel. Just be sure you use the correct pilot bushing so you catch the input shaft.

Do you know if the stock corvette small block bellhousing clear the LS1 flywheel?

I don't think so. The stock sbc flywheel is 153 teeth. The LSx flywheels are 168. Big clock bellhousings should work, as will the Lakewood steel bell.

Not what I really wanted to hear. But I guess that is the way it goes. I still have several months before I actually get to the point of doing this swap so I have plenty of time to get it. I know Keisler makes a swap bellhousing that will work. I may have to call them and pick it up this summer.

Hey Eddie!!! Welcome to the insanity.

http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/tr-3550.html - GM TKO500s have 26 spline input shaft.

http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/t56_early_gm.html - GM LS1 T56 is also 26 spline input shaft.

As long as you can get the bellhousing to set the pilot bearing depth correct, it should work. I have heard that Lakewood has a bellhousing for a Muncie to LS1 so that may work for the TKO as well.

I don't think you would have to have a conversion bell housing as long as you have a stock bell housing that will accept the big Chevy flywheel. The bore of the bell housing where the transmission fits in has to be right, and you would need to use the appropriate clutch set up and longer pilot bearing/bushing but it would have worked for me.

Novas...

assuming the correct bellhousing, what did you have to do for clutch linkage? were you able to retain the mech. setup? where did you source the pilot bushing?

I was not able to use a stock bell housing since Chevy IIs like mine never came with the big flywheel. I used a Lakewood scattershield (not that I wanted to, expensive and heavy). The LS1 doesn't have a spot on the block for the pivot for the mechanical linkage but I am going to make brackets that work. Then I can use my stock type mechanical linkage. I actually bought a pilot bearing from a part number I got hear but would use a bushing that can be found now instead. I forget who has them but they are around. One thing to watch for is that since the clutch is further away from the clutch fork you need to use the long throw-out bearing and maybe an adjustable pivot to get the geometry on the fork correct.

I coulda went hydrualic, and maybe I shoulda and there is a debate here on which is best but i will do the mechanical .
