Default Any 4.8L?

Curious if anyone had done anything with the 4.8L engine? My buddy's RST Silverado has that engine and it sounds sooo nice and different.

I have one in my '05 standard cab long box. I haven't done anything to it, and probably won't, but it is a very impressive little engine. It loves to rev and my wife still hasn't got the hang of driving it without sqwaking the tires.
If it were in something lighter I'm sure it would really come alive with a mild cam.

Yeah I have been really wanting to start a V8 swap into an FD RX-7 and thought about using the 4.8 instead of an LS1. It can be an exotic looking car and the smaller displacent of the 4.8 would be a nice sound to go with it!

I just wrecked my '02 Silverado back in March in the central NJ area, it had a 4.8L in it that was babied its whole life. Amsoil for its first two years, then German Castrol Syntec right up until the wreck.

Some lucky guy is going to score big at whatever junkyard the truck went to.

I bought my 4.8l for $354 shipped (and $250 of that was shipping!) off ebay. I plan on using a 5.3 crank & rods, with the 4.8 piston because they are flat tops, where the 5.3 pistons are dished.

i think that makes it a 5.3 with a higher compression ratio...

Yeah, just a high compression 5.3. Stock they're both supposed to be at 9.5:1, they had to dish the 5.3 pistons to keep it there... My rough calculation shows that The 4.8 w/ 5.3 crank & rods (OR 5.3 with 4.8 pistons) will be around 10:1 - 10.75:1 assuming the head gasket is .040 compressed. The only think I don't know is the deck height, so Assuming the pistons is .030 down in the hole at TDC the compression will be closer to the 10:1 side. If it's 0 at TDC, it will be more towards the 10.75:1 side.

Like I said, Rough calculation. Keep in mind that's just Static Compression ratio; throw a big cam in there and that will soak some of it up.

4.8/5.3 use the same block
different cranks and set of rods
conventional 3.622 stroke found on 5.7/6.0 also used in 5.3
different balance.
rods for the 5.3 are same as 5.7/6.0 6.098 length
4.8 uses 3.268 stroke crank along with 6.276 length rods
piston diameter for both the 5.3 and 4.8 are 3.876
with compression height of 1.338 +/- .001
ls series deck are 9.240 for all stock blocks
pistons used in 5.3 have a slight spherical dish at about 5cc's
4.8/5.3 blocks have been know to be overbored up to .125
to displace 346-347ci with 3.622 stroke crank
basically a iron 5.7 ls1
i have the machined 3 blocks for this application.
