Default Metal intake elbows

I want to construct a metal intake tubing set up. Looking for a good place to purchase mandrel bent tubing that I can fabricate. At this point I am not sure whether I will go with mild steel, aluminized steel or aluminum. A lot will depend on what is available in the shapes and diameters I want.

thanks for ideas

Pat

I too want to replace my rubber elbow and have been thinking of doing the same. polished stainless would great but costly, Alum is lighter and can be polished up. Thin Steel is easy to work with and cheaper.

Let me know if you find a local supplier for any of the following and what your going with.

Do you know of an exhaust shop that can bend large diameter exhaust tubing? Some of them are able to bend 3" and larger because of all the newer diesel trucks with huge exhaust pipes. If you can find a place, get them to bend up what you need and paint it to match your car.

You can buy U-bends from summit. 3" and all the way to 3 1/2" but the radius is different. The only problem I had with them is the space between the front of the motor and the radiator. If you have the room, buy the U bend and cut it.

Yeah, would need Tight Radius and Mandrel bent tubing.

I know Airflow.com and Intakehoses.com are two common ones that many use.

You can contact Morton Welding. They can bend tubes up to 6" diameter. The 4" tubing can be bent in 4", 4.5" and 6" radius. You can have any angle bent too. They carry all material types. They can make a tube for your entire intake.

Excellent! Did you go with 4" OD tubing? I am inclined to go with mild steel, welded and finished then either painted or powder coated. I know you need to use rubber or silicon connectors on the MAF to isolate it from vibratiions. Can you shape the metal tube to go over the throttle body then clamp it in place without a connector?

Thanks for all the input guys

The question is, how to make a template for them to bend? That sure would be nice to have one that did not need to be welded.

This is my plan. These will all be cut down after installation.

TB -> 4" coupler -> 4" Stainless 90* -> 4"-3.5" Coupler -> MAF -> 3.5" coupler -> 3.5" stainless -> 3.5" Cone filter

The cone filter could be mounted directly to the MAF, but I want to extend it out for cooler air.

I originally got stainless so I could polish it, but after a couple hours I think some of the scratches are too deep (even after hitting w/ sandpaper) and there are some imperfections from the mandrel bender. So I might just paint or powder coat now. Mild steel would probably be fine.

Just wondering why metal intake instead of the rubber? Stu I was looking at your intake set up yesterday. Maybe now I should wait and see what your goona do before I order anything. Post some pics of the new setup when you are finished please.

Probably my **** retentive side coming through. I just am not completely happy with the way my intake looks. I also want to get my filter in a different place. I want to build a bracket to support it as well, it is just resting on top of my upper rad hose now. I still don't know why I went with that hump hose instead of just a coupler. It works just fine, I just want a more finished look. My plan is to get the metal intake done then paint or powder coat it the same color as my fuel rail covers.

Once I get it done I will put pictures up and also add it to my journal as I work on it. Then my rubber parts will all be for sale cheap too.

Hey Stu, check out the tubing that Spectre Performance makes. The best part, you can simply go to the ricer section at any Pep Boys and pick up 4" dia elbows of 22, 45, 60, and 90 degrees. Here is a link for an intake on a 68 Camaro with these tubes:
