John,
I would say it depends on what you have in your shop to manuver an actual engine with. I use 2x2 legs under my overhead door tracks,a 4"channel across them and lift with a chainfall. A cherry picker would be nice but I don't have enough need for it to warrant it sitting around the rest of the time.
If you are doing just one project it may be hard to justify the expense. If you have friends that may need it also, maybe you could get them to chip in on the cost.
I must say that I wouldn't mind having one for locating the holes on my adaptor plates, but I'll survive without it. That is about the only thing I will need one for.Let us know what you do.

Not a real heavy engine to work with. You should bea ble to either work with the one you are using, or if you have a lot of fab work ahead, go get a bad block from a junkyard.

Your engine is going to be in and out ten or more times during your swap, especially if you are swapping across platforms like we are: LS1 into BMW 3-series. The foam block is worth every penny. So easy to lift in and out. We used it to fab engine mounts, bolt our headers to it and then build the fwd part of the exhaust system, check for fan & radiator clearance by bolting the water pump to it, etc. You can always sell it on eBay when you are done, and probably get 80-90% of what you paid for it. If so, its cheaper than getting a junk block and then getting rid of that iron when you finish your swap.

you will be suprised at how many times u have to put the motor in....then back out jsut becuase theres so many things to look at and you dont want to rig somethin up just to get you by....you want to do it right. I wish i had one for my swap but for the few that i do i wont buy one. They ebay idea would work good I think.
