Some info on shifting

If you have ever driven a 5 or 6 speed Allison 1000 you know how shifty those are under certain driving conditions. The Allison is clutch-to-clutch also. The 6L80-E takes some getting used to just as the Allison does.

Hey Vic,

The 6L80E shifts just like the 4L65E, 1>2>3>4>5>6. Unless you command it to start in second.

- Clutch-to-clutch shifting
- Wide 6:1 gear ratio spread; steep 4.03:1 first gear for improved launch and acceleration
- Two overdrive gears for reduced revs at highway speed – 0.85:1 in fifth and 0.67:1 in sixth
- Rigid aluminium case for low noise transfer to the vehicle and high torque capacity.
- Performance mode detects sporty driving and holds gears rather than allowing upshifts
- 32-bit electro-hydraulic control module

The values on GMI are misleading.

GM seems to have rated their HD transmissions for max gearbox torque of 885 ft-lbs (4L80E / 85E & 6L90E)....

GM Powertrains' website has a bunch more info, I'd trust it more than GMI's info.

Here's some data from it:
4L60E Max Eng Tq = 360 ft lbs, Max Gearbox Tq = 610 ft lbs
4L70E Max Eng Tq = 400 ft lbs, Max Gearbox Tq = 670 ft lbs

4L80E Max Eng Tq = 440 ft lbs, Max Gearbox Tq = 885 ft lbs
4L85E Max Eng Tq = 460 ft lbs, Max Gearbox Tq = 885 ft lbs

6L80E Max Eng Tq = 439 ft lbs, Max Eng Pwr = 469 hp, Max Gearbox Tq = 664 ft lbs
6L90E Max Eng Tq = 531 ft lbs, Max Eng Pwr = 452 hp, Max Gearbox Tq = 885 ft lbs

Allison 1000 Max Eng Tq = 660 ft lbs, Max Eng Pwr = 365hp
Allison 2200 & 2350 Max Eng Tq = 565 to 660 ft lbs, Max Eng Pwr = 300 to 340hp, depending upon application.

An interesting side note is that the 4L80E is used behind the Duramax in van applications, but its derated to 250hp / 460 ft lbs tq because the trans isn't rated for more (trucks running Allisons are rated at 365hp / 660 ft lbs).

On topic, I find it interesting that the 6L80E is rated for more power but less tq than the 6L90E, but the gear ratios are the same (best as I can find). Funny, huh...

I am still waiting, cash in hand. Seems like with alot of these companies, if you arent wearing a gold chain and sporting a corvette logo, or willing to hack up a nice vehicle, you gotta fight tooth and nail to get anything done.

I'm working up a 6L90E swap for my 70 MC.. The tranny tunnel in most cars starts getting tight at the TH400 size.. I have been searching for someone who has done the swap into a "A" body car..

Interesting, if I swap the LSX/6L80E combo onto my 68 camaro Im looking at less 150lbs for the engine but plus 100 lbs for the tranny (current TH350 weighs 125 lbs vs 230 lbs for the 6L80E). Damn, I was really hoping to make the car lighter by going with the all alum engine. At least the weight is farther back I guess. : )

Further back, lower center of gravity, and it'll keep your engine in a narrower torque band.
