Default 69 Camaro swap

I picked up a 98 LS1/4L60E and I was thinking about putting into my 69 SS ragtop. Currently I have a 383/2004R, so I think that the 4L60E will mount on the tranny cross member...with some adjustment.

I think that I understand how to hook everything up once I drop it in, but what do I have to do to mount it. I have heard that I will need to buy some motor mounts and have the oil pan "notched". Are there any other things that I have to do to mount it in the car? Can it be mounted without dropping the oil pan and having it modified? How can I make it fit without paying someone to modify stuff for me?

After I drop it in what mods will I have to make for the accessories like power steering, alternator, AC, etc?

Hi...what I did was get a modified oil pan from street and performance @ www.hotrodlane.cc ...the sell them for 200 as an exchange ....then i got their motor mount adaptors that will let you use your original motor mounts...I got the headers from them too they will custom make them to your needs.....wiring harness I modified myself...anything else is easy

You can purchase LS1 engine mounts that will bolt directly to your smallblock chevy motor mounts. These are available at YearOne (call them) or BRP (link above forum).

No way to install the LS1 without modifying the oil pan unless you ditch the factory steering setup and swap over to a front-mounted rack/pinion setup. BRP has a conversion kit for using 98-2002 f-body racks to fit your 69.

What about the stock LS1 accessories? Any mods to them?

If you use the BRP mounts like I did then there are no modifications needed. S&P mounts require extensive mods, relocating, using their expensive brackets.

OK....So just buy the BRP mounts, get a modified oil pan and drop that sucker in there?

Give Phil at BRP a call, he can answer that question more specifically. I'm not sure about your tranny and its crossmember and if it will perfectly match up with the LS1 (location-wise). BRP is making me a T56 crossmember.

Stainless Works sells longtube headers to fit LS1s installed in 1st gen Camaros. They are also a site sponsor.

I used the S&P mounts and all my accessories fit with no problem. I also used their headers. I had Speartech build me harness and reprogram my PCM. My swap has turned out great(although I still have some tuning issues because I put in a bigger cam). I have to say this is not the easiest or cheapest swap to say the least. But it has been worth it. And one more thing, don't forget about the fuel system. I used an in tank pump from Rock Valley. There are cheaper ways to do it but in my opinion this was the best way. All your accessories fit in the stock F-body locations? Please give me more details. No frame interference? How high does it sit? What frame mounts? etc.

I used Energy Suspension motor mounts and S&P adapters. I did not use the air condtioning. That would have hit the frame. The alternator clears the frame with about 1 inch to spare. Power steering was no problem. The motor sits in there nice. I also used S&P headers. They fit good also.

And, don't forget the accompanying weight reduction attributed to the rack & pinion changeover! Tony reported this earlier in a related thread.

We installed the LS1/T56 in my 69 before any of the motor mount adapters were available, so we had to fabricate them, as well as modify my TH400 crossmember.

The way we positioned it, we are running a stock un-modified F-body pan, with stock steering. I would assume that my motor is sitting about 1" farther back than it would with the adapters.

Tom, Do you know whether the A4 can be mounted in the same fashion (will it fit 1" farther back) as the LS1 w/manual?
If so, do you market the engine mounts? Thanks, Glenn

I had a TH400 bolted to the LS1, and all seemed fine, as far as clearance. I do not market any adapters.

When we do conversions here, we have been fabricating them to give us the optimum engine placement. We may start using some of the bolt-in adapters in the future.
