Default Think this block is cracked? Help

I have a chance to buy a 2001 Firebird with 45 thousand miles that was totaled. I want it for the engine and transmission and to part out the rest. I just hope the block is not cracked. Take a look at the pics and give me some opinions. I was told I can probably get it for under three thousand.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like the bumper and hood took the blunt of the attack. The throttle body and MAF are bent up, but I don't think that the block would be cracked. I think the motor should be fine still IMO but I am far from and expert. Free bump for the topic

Its hard to tell from the photos. Have you heard it run? You would be able to tell if it threw a rod and there are major holes in the block or the oil pan but without
pulling the motor and inspecting it there is no way to know for sure but if the motor still runs its probably ok.

According to the site I saw it on it ran afterwards, but thats all the ad says. The place selling is a site that body shops or salvage yards buy from. A body shop I deal with turned me on to the site. I asked him if I could go look at it personally and he said he didnt think so but would let me know. I think its an as is thing.

If it runs, it's probably ok. There's no real way to tell unless you sonic test it and completely strip down the block. If you can get it for under three grand, I'd take it. It's worth the risk. However, based on the photos, it looks as if the hood and the bumper took most of the impact. Keep in mind I am by no means an expert on this and am simply stating my opinion based on the photos that are provided.

I would say even if it is cracked you can probably part out all of the other useful parts for around $3000 so it wouldn't be a complete loss.

Whats the name of the site? I just bought a 2002 convertible SS from ride safely. Sweet deal. I finally was able to go see it in person, and I think it looks better in person than in the pics.

Anyway, I think your motor should be fine. Radiator and anything in front of it, maybe not.

I buy and cut them up regularly from many online auction sites, I bet it's fine but it's going to go for over 3k for sure.... 4k-5k are the norm for 6 speeds....

Well I think Im gonna go for it and hope for the best. If its cracked I will just deal. Hopefully I can make most of my money back by selling parts I dont need. There seem to be more yeas than nays and my original thought was to go for it so we will see. I will post again after I get the wounded beast to the house and start working.

Thanks for all the feedback!!

Well I chickened out.... I didnt want to risk getting the car and haveing the engine be screwed up.
I decided to go with an 04 GTO Engine Trans ECU Wiring package with 27 thousand miles.
I will actually consider selling this set up if I can sell it quick otherwise I will just keep it for myself. I would have to get $6,700 plus shipping for it to be worth my while.

I just orderred it and it should be in next week. I assume I can use this oil pan? I have seen alot of questions about which clutch to use. Can I use the factory flywheel? Is there a certain type of clutch I HAVE to use? Do I need to use something from another type of car for this to work right? I was just going to start with a basic factory clutch set up as far as disc and pressure plate and get the other parts from Hinson (master cylinder etc.) It will be mainly a street car at first and will probably eventually start racing after a while. Its going into an 89 240 S13.

Thanks in advance!!

Picked up my SS yesterday. I went and picked up the parts I needed from an LS1Tech member last night. Hopefully, I can get the parts on this weekend.

Ok...I just got my engine today. The back of my intake is cracked. Is this a reason to send this back or should I just ask for money for an intake? I can see a piece of it inside the intake looking throught the hole. I also see a big round hole in the back which was plugged with a plastic cap with duct tape wrapped around it. What is supposed to be there? I am not feeling so great about this engine. I will be calling the place I got it from tomorrow. Let me know what you think. My power steering pulley is bent to hell and one of the coils is screwed up too but I think my main concern is the intake. I dont have much knowledge of these engines so any feedback is appreciatied.

Well I found the big piece that broke off. It was inside the intake. When I put it up against the crack it fit it perfect. I aslo saw a plastic housing that looks like it fit inside the hole. Even with this piece placed in the crack it looks like a piece or pieces still could have broke off of the other side. It feels jagged the rest of the way around the hole. If these pieces did break off while the engine was running would they have caused damage to the engine? I know its plastic but I am still a bit unsure. My gut says if they will pay for a new intake to just go for it. There was also a small amount of what seemed to be oil in the intake as well that I found when fishing out the piece that cracked off. Let me know what you think.

Thanks

I am hoping it is just transportation damaged or damage from when they pulled it out.

Some oil in the intake is pretty normal. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as you get a another intake from the shipper or whoever.

Its my opinion that the intake damage was probably done during engine removal, P/S pulley damage is usually from a wreck, I have never got an F-body with a pulley as they're plastic and break off. Anyway, if you keep the motor, I would try to make them give you a new intake, and this is the important part, make sure they give you an Ls6 intake (what an 04 GTO came with) and not the less desireable ls1 intake. Or have them take some off the price. There's a big price difference between the two intakes. just my 2 cents. Good luck. Eric
