Default To Modify, or Not To Modify

Recently sold my 2001 Chevrolet Corvette and simply fell in love with the LS1 engine and 4L60E transmission and have decided to put the same setup into my 1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. I can find a stock engine, transmission, wiring harness, and computer relatively cheap, but I am torn on whether I should just throw the bad boy in there or if I should go through it and maybe swap out some parts or something to that effect.

What would ya'll do?

P.S. The Corvette had ported and polished cylinder heads, port-matched intake maifold, and aftermarket exhaust. Sucker ran like a dream. :-)

I would say if you don't mind a modded engine you should at the very least do bolt ons and a cam. I am surprised to see you did ported heads but not a cam on your corvette?

Atleast a cam as its a pain to put in with the motor in the car. Heads can be put on in a couple hours without having to remove your radiator, drop your oil pan, crank pulley... blah blah blah.

That is kinda' what I was thinking. It not being in a vehicle, it would be super easy to work on. Plus, the car would not be stuck while it was being worked on.

I just have to decide what exactly to do to it. lol Not looking for ridiculous horsepower. Like I said, I was VERY pleased with how well the Corvette performed with simple modifications and as of right now, I still have the factory L69 H.O. 305 in my SS. So it will not take much to make me happy. :-) I was thinking along the lines of a top-end kit or something...? The ones a person sees in Jeg's High Performance and/or Summit Racing that, "Makes 500 Horsepower on a 383!". Maybe a camshaft that makes the engine barely run at idle? :-D

Because they are pretty sick as-is. :-)

Now, what to do to spruce it up a bit...?

Any suggestions? Any kits that come to mind, as I afore mentioned?

Thanks

No kits really for the LSx that I know of. Main things reliability wise would be LS2 timing chain, LS6 ported oil pump, lifters (LS7 or Cadillac CTS-V). As far as performance goes maybe a cam, heads depending on what LS you start with, UD pulley, LT headers and ported TB. Since you said auto what about a converter?

Then the normal gaskets, head studs.....

What would be your hp goal?

Great ideas so far, guys. Planning on a factory LS1/4l60E setup.

As far as horsepower goals, like I said, nothing insane. Maybe 400-450 at the REAR WHEELS...? That should be pretty doable, shouldn't it? Since they come 350 rwhp factory...?

Thanks again

I am thinking of upgrading my 98 Vette LS1 I just went through it. it had 42,000 miles I put new cam berings, rod and mains, rings high volume oil pump ls2 timing gears and chain. LS6 vally cover,03 LS6 cam and new Ls6 Springs. Ported the 98 heads all new gaskets. didn't use oil. I had it out so I went through it. Everything except the intake and Acc's. PM me if interested.

i'd do the cam now since its out, hell thats what i'm doing. I'm doing a 224/224 114 cam as its pretty tame since my wife will DD the Datsun during the week to and from work yet it will be a nice little HP boost with the LS6 intake and headers
