Look at that MPH !! , especially VS the 60 ft times. You were reelin' in the 10 sec car on the top end. That is a car that hauls once hooked. Would like to see a roll on race with that one....
Don't go chasing 60 foots ! you will lose all your road race handling.

I won't be pursuing drag racing. It was fun though! I'll go again next year after my off season upgrades...

I wonder what the combined number of manhours has been sunk into those two cars on that computer screen? You guys have really nailed the complete build with those cars. Much more balanced than mine. Thanks for setting the bar for us.

More than anything else it takes huge dedication to an idea to get these things done. Thanks for the kind words.

Damn, a buddy of mine went to Vegas for SEMA (among other reasons). I'd have loved to make the trip, though I'm lucky I survived the other times I've been (and getting paddled by a heart attack grill nurse wouldn't help on the home front).

It's been really cool to see all the high end pro touring style builds here. Brings them down to reality. Pictures do make things look a lot nicer than they really are. The funny thing about the paddling is that Joe finished his meal...

sadly, I never got a chance to check out the one in Phoenix before it closed.

So the big builds are like celebrities, eh? Look great on TV but horrific in person? That makes me feel a little better...

Not horrific in person, more.. "very well used".

Think of it more as polarizing the quality of things. The super-blingy-shiny-never-driven cars look even more spectacular under the shining lights than they do in internet pictures, and the pro-touring cars that actually get driven are a breath of fresh air in person, because you see some rust on several raw steel prototype parts, rubber marks, paint scratches and rock chips. Personally I'd take the "experienced" and well-sorted pro-tourer over the shiny-but-maybe-nicer-parts car any day of the week. If anything it made me feel a little less bad/embarassed about the body/paint quality of my car, but let's be honest, these things are built to be driven the **** out of haha.

Mark, Sweet build! Your attention to detail is amazing. I found your build about a year ago and look forward to any new posts. I have scoured this thread looking for more info on the modern seat belt and rear side panel mod's you did, but no luck. I'm in the middle of a 2nd gen build and would like more info on these, if possible, please. Interested in if the belts are the originals, and just relocated? Also curious about the inserts in the panels themselves. What are those from? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Again, love the build. Thanks, Rod

Here you go Rod...
The belts came from a 2007 corvette, (they came with the seats). The overall length of the belts is a bit short however. If you're a big guy (over 275lbs) they may not reach. The guides for the belts where they go through the plastic panels are from a 1996 GMC extra cab pickup. They are from the rear belt retractors where the belt comes down from the roof. They did require painting as mine were grey. ( go to a wrecker and snoop around, you should find something that will work. )

After welding in the sail panel filler plates, I tapped the holes. I did this after welding to ensure the threads didn't get damaged. To transfer the location of the holes to the sail panel exactly I took a bolt that fit the newly threaded hole and spun it in a drill while running a grinder on an angle to get a cone shape on the bolt. I put the 'cone bolt' into the hole, threaded it out just a bit, fitted the plastic sail panel and being sure the plastic panel was in the exact finished postition I gave the plastic a good thump with the palm of my hand over where the cone bolt was. The cone will stamp a dimple into the back of the plastic and act as a perfect guide to drill a matching hole in the plastic panel.

+++ Here's a copy of my original post (#191) +++
I decided to put modern seatbelts in the car. First I figured out where the retractor would go, and the shoulder pivot. Then re-enforced the areas with 1/4" flat bar. I put the shoulder pivot low enough that it will be in the sail panel instead of the headliner. The retractor will be behind the side panel. I just need to cut a slot in the panel for the belt to pass through.

Just in case anyone else wants to do this mod, you have to remove the ratchet part from the retractor otherwise if you pull it all the way out, it will retract and jam. The cover to remove is the one that faces the front of the car. If you take of the wrong one the spring goes flying. Not good. Trust me.
