Default LQ4 upgrades prior to installation

I'm getting ready to install a 6.0/4l80e into my 86 monte carlo. Now, while the engine is out, would be a good time to be thinking about modifications. I am on a budget and want to improve on the factory rated 300hp/360tq while still remaining within my budget. I have a wait4me performance pcm tune that is supposedly good for a hp increase of 15-30. I will be using f-body accessories with an underdrive crank pulley. I am also considering a restalled 4l80e torque converter. Where else can I get the best bang for my buck mod? New Cam and Springs are probably out of the question but I've seen used LS6 cam and spring packages in the $200 range.....Would this be worthwhile on a 6.0?

Whats your budget? I'd say L92 heads and a good cam to match. Hive you plenty of HP. Or just got ls6 cam and intake to stay in your budget. Should bring you in to the high 300hp range

I'm limited to around $500 for upgrades. Much like everyone else, I'm getting nickeled and dimed to death on all the little parts needed for the swap. New heads and cam would be nice but I need to spend the money on getting the car driveable. Of the $500, I intened to spend $200 on a restalled torque converter. So that leaves $300 for: 1) LS6 intake, 2) ls6 cam and springs, 3) pacesetter headers or ???????

I would definately go with that since you already have Car Accessories on the Engine. Use what room you now have, expecially since the Car Intakes don't fit with a Truck Water Pump.

Here are some Intakes.. I'm sure you can get the price knocked down a little..

Oil pump and timing set if you have not done it already.

Then just save your money for the L92 heads and a cam.

Your best bang for the buck will be a cam and valve springs. If you can't afford it now wait till later like suggested. You will unquestionably eat through what little extra you have right now in incidentals. Funny how the budget goes out the window the closer the car gets to running.

I always try to keep from having to redo things. You mention headers, I would get those right from the start. Can be an costly thing to redo later.

I would go with headers if they are available for your app as they add power and efficiency. If you don`t mind a little more noise they are really a win-win.

A cam is also a good idea, Most people will say that you shouldn`t bother with a LS6 cam because it will just make you wish you went bigger....but it will increase your HP nonetheless. You don`t get as much HP as if you went with a bigger cam, but with the LS6 cam you won`t really even notice it is there, seamless driveability, with a perfect idle, it just wont run out of power so quick.

I would not change the intake. Unless you plan on a convertor and a huge cam its not going to be a gain. the truck intake makes a bunch more TQ, and the LS6 intake does not really make more power till 6k. http://www.performancetrucks.net/for...d.php?t=418985
