All that weight up front...
How you gonna hook up all that torque?
Y not just go turbo LSX, and do a mild cam and gears to get MPG back?
Sorry man, just doesn't seem worth while to me...
And I really hate being a nay-sayer.
I like the early pick up idea much better.
I'd go w like a 50 Chevy 3100!

I have spent a small fortune swapping in my LS2 into my chevelle. If you want a diesel that bad buy a truck with one in it and have the car and truck both. You can probably buy a used diesel truck for the same price as a pullout engine/transmission with all the fabrication you will need, harness, computer(s) and money you will put into your car to make it work. Not to mention the fact that the weight of the engine is way too much for you car.
I personally think it is a horrible idea but if it is really what you want go for it. I would urge you to think it through before you start pulling apart a working car. Go talk with the guy that put a duramax in his grand national, talk to him on the phone if you can find him and ask him the pro's and cons of this conversion. Just hate to see you waste a bunch of money.

I don't think a T56 will live for long behind a stock DMax. Numbers for the current stockers are 360hp and 650 ft-lbs of torque. That's above all of the torque ratings for the T56 (including the Viper spec one). And that's without any tweaking of the DMax, and they're capable of significantly north of 1000 ft-lbs.
The T56 just isn't big enough to do that kind of duty. After all, there are lots of guys with more power and half the torque breaking them. And torque (and shock loading) that breaks transmissions. Guess what, the DMax has both.
I personally don't see this being a practical swap, but to each his own.

I was at the Monday test and tune for Hot Rod magazines Drag Week on Monday. There was a Mustang there with a Duramax swap. Drove to Bowling Green, KY from Texas and got 30 mpg. I am sure there are more details about it on the Hot Rod website.

Ok I agree that the t-56 probably would not last long, and make the car slower at the strip, due to not keeping the boost up.
Anyone know of a auto transmission that would hold that kind of power and be smaller than the allison? About the same size as the t-56 would be ideal.
The project probably just got scraped in my mind because I love the Stick in my bird!!

Hell bud go for it. I had a 94Z that I was thinking of doing this to. Some one made me a good offer on the car and I sold it. I know Banks makes a different intake that might work. They use it on the Lemans truck.

The duramax long block weighs 836 lbs, not sure what an LSx iron block weighs. I would wait for the 1/2 ton model duramax's to come out, smaller package, and you may be able to use an auto besides the allison.

I swear I have seen a 3rd Gen that Banks Power put a TT Duramax into but I can't find it on their website. Might send them an e-mail and see if I'm right and if they would provide any info on it. Its not the same car obviously but dimensions/layout/available space is closer to the 4th Gen than any of the truck stuff that's out there.
Regardless, good luck, I would love to see it if it works out. Get a picture of the entire car twisting when you launch it.

I have measured both engines and they are not that much differant.
The dmax is a bit wider though. with the turbo on top of the dmax I would need about 5 more inches. very very close without the turbo up there.
