Default She's Alive!!! It's been a long journey.

Well the day has finally come. I started the car tonight. I think I took the first body panel off almost 3 years ago. I still have quite a bit of work to get done, but the motor is now running on a base tune. Could only run it for a couple minutes at a time because the cooling system wasn't flowing. It seems like the thermostat is stuck or something. Motor was hitting 210* and the radiator was cold to the touch so we shut it down and let it cool.

A couple notes. Fan relay takes ground and wiring a couple gauges with the ground and signal wires swapped doesn't help them work. Other than that I just had to tighten a couple fuel fittings. So when I get the cooling figured out and tow it to get an alignment it should be able to hit the street. Thanks for all the support around here. Now I can have a little more confidence when I answer questions.

Build:
'71 Chevelle
LS1/T56
243's
Custom Cam
UD pulley
Ported TB
85mm MAF
LT's
CTS-V lifters
ported LS6 oil pump
3" Exhaust with X-Pipe, Bullets and dumps

Enjoy. I know I will.

Thats good to hear! Sounds like you are hot on my heels for getting it on the road. Isn't it such a great feeling to hear that engine roar?

Great going Stealth.. did that puppy fire right up ? What a relief it must have been to finally hear the engine crank over and come to life ! I know it had to be followed with a smile from ear to ear..

Now.. let see it on the road !.. After all of these year that I have been following your build.. I feel that I know it like my own! LOL...

Congrat again..! I will be watching for the road test result soon ! :d

We tested the fuel pump and fan before starting the car with the tuning software. I had the fan wired backwards (I thought power switched it.) Then when I turned the key it started right away. Oil pressure gauge wasn't reading so I turned it off. Turns out the signal and grounds were switched. So fired it again and had oil pressure on the gauge. Then I notice the fuel pressure was at only 20psi at idle, but it was almost 60 before starting. Luckily I had a mechanical gauge sitting around I hooked up and it stayed at ~60 while running. So either the gauge or sending unit has a problem I think. Other then that everything went well.

Are you sure it's full of coolant? If it's low, it won't flow very well. This seems to be a common first start up problem. Good luck, and congrats!

I think there was a large air bubble in the engine. I opened the rad last night while it was hot and it was full. This afternoon it was about half empty. I replaced the thermostat anyway.

If you have an AFCO swap radiator I recommend jacking up the drivers side some and topping the coolant off. The way the filler is on the rad you can't really fill the top inch or so and this keeps the upper hose and engine from filling. I swapped the thermostat and topped the radiator off. Then jacked up the drivers side and let it flow into the upper hose. It took quite a bit more fluid after that.

I let it run for about 20 min tonight and the cooling system is flowing. Things are cooling down nicely now. So far so good. Now I need to get the bumpers, hood, trunk lid and seats in/on and get it to the alignment shop. Can't wait to get it on the road.

I had to fill the block with coolant through the top radiator hose in order to get the thermostat to open the first time. Sometimes they just don't want to open, the first time, without doing that.
