Default Fuel pump

how the hell do u get to it? do u really have to move the driveshaft to get the gas tank down? i was 100% sure it would have some kind of "door" on the top to get to it.

i just helped a few friends of mine pull a tank today and do a pump. We removed his exhaust, upper panhard bar or whatever the hell that other bar is above the panhard bar, the heat shield and dropped it straight out the back.

Nah, because having a simple door to get to the pump would make way too much sense for GM. Do the above slave work as mentioned above, or cut a hole in your trunk like others have done. Either way is ugly, but necessary...

I would just drop the tank and here's why.

I originally went with the trap door method on my T/A. After the first door was cut, I didn't have enough room to remove all the lines and pull the assembly out... very close to the bottom of the hatch/trunk floor, as others have pointed out.

Decided to cut the trap door larger... still had issues manuvering the assembly at the right angle so I didnt break anything.

In the end, I decided to stop cutting bigger and bigger trap doors and just drop the damn tank. Glad I did, made life much easier when I had to get the pump assembly back in the tank... would've been lots of swearing and wrench throwing if I had to do that in the trunk!

Just watch out for the plastic vent lines to the charcoal canister when dropping the tank... they snap easy and are kind of hidden on the tank.

Good luck.

let me know how it goes with cutting an access panel. I'm in the middle of the road with either dropping my tank or cutting a panel.

I cut mine, like they say, take your time, dont try and push though it too hard, and you will be fine. The pump is in the same spot on the vert as others.. if you have any questions about it, or need pics, pm me.

I think the trap door mod is the easiest way to go about it, IMO. Heres a couple pics of what I did:

I cut mine into an "L" shape to get better access to the quick-disconnect fittings and you know what? I have no goddamn idea how you guys were able to so easily disconnect and connect those lines. Even with the added "L" cut out, I had to take long nose pliers and hope I could grab on to the fittings to disconnect them. Then, trying to put them back together was even more fun: each line rests on top of one another and they're still buried under some sheetmetal so you can't exactly just place the pump and hook up the lines right away.

I read that some of you guys used your fingers to get to the lines. I don't think I've had this much trouble since doing the plugs and wires on the '97; next time I'm dropping the tank. Well, I mean on the '99 T/A I'll just drop the tank...

i guess it depends on the car...maybe yours just came with shorter, thus tighter, hoses. mine were zero problems. although i do believe ive seen some other cars with that L shape cut. i doubt it was yours, i saw it while doing a search before i started this thread.
