sub in a convt
I am working on a box which fits the pass through ledge right now, kinda similar to JohnnyBs, I should be done with it in a week or so, I will be happy to share the details if you like to build stuff yourself, That's another way to go but it won't fit a 10, actually you could make a 10 fit, if you had the right 10, maby. JohnnyB gets lots of praise for his boxes if you prefer to just buy one.
The best option if you want to use your 10 is probibly a passenger side stealth box. I don't like the idea of removing my spare personally, but they do look nice and you don't lose your cargo area.
Imho this is the most effective (both for cost and no sacrifice to storage) way to get bass out of a convertible. With the top up it hits similar to a coupe, with the top down you of course lose alot but you still have accuracy. Come this spring I am going to tinker around with some spacers to keep the top lifted an inch or so off the shelf it rests on when dropped. If this works then the bass will be very good even with the top down.
If you are a real craftsmen, there have been some really nice concepts such as replacing one of the rear seats with a sub box. This would be the best way to get a really hard hitting low-end in a vert, but requires alot of skill and much funding.
Boxes in the trunk don't work well because the sound needs to get to you. You have to push the hell out of the subs to get any benefit. This is the battle ax approach and although it can be made to work, it isn't effecient or elegant. You spend more money on subs, power, lose space, and risk trunk rattles.
The sub box in the dash is actually pretty interesting, but I think it would be more efficient to look at a sort of transmission line enclosure in a ceneter console shell. If you can seat a very solid 6.5" or 8" driver low in the cabin, it can sound pretty good. Just find a new Mustang convertible with a mach system to see what is possible. Machs use 8"ers in the doors and though the bass is artificially boomy, it's there and sounds pretty good.
Sorry but there is no really easy solution like in a coupe. The JBslim approach seems to be the best approach. For me I had a very low tolerance for ghetto rattles and needed every bit of that little trunk, so the choice was quite simple.
ill let you know when i am done.
