Question Just bought a 97 vette! Which mods are the best for the money?

Ok! I am kind of new to these cars so I have some learning to do. I just sold my 2002 WS6 for the M6 vette. It is completely stock and was wondering which induction and exhaust mods I should do. For example, I have read a lot about the Vara Ram induction; is it what everyone makes it out to be?

thanks

The Vararam suffers from quality problems in my opinion. At this time I'd think about getting a Haltech TRAP, or simply remove the stock air box cover (hold the filter on with zip ties.

Until you get headers there is no significant power in the exhaust system, but the stock mufflers sound like a hoover so you might want to replace them anyway.

Exhaust is totally a matter of personal preference, see if you can find people in your area and listen to their cars.

VARARAM is probably the most popular high perf. option right now and the HALLTECH TRAP is up there also.

My advice woud be one of the above, headers, ls1 edit dyno tuning and 4.10 gears. Many have gone to 4.10s on M6 and they ARE ALL HAPPY AS a big in ****. I have 4.10s on my 03 Zo6 as well as other aggressive mods listed in my sig and the car flat out flys!!!!!MOst will tell you 4.10s are the best aggressive bolt on mod you can do on a M6 C5 that you will REALLY FEEL and will give you that kick in the *** feeling you are looking for without TOUCHING the internals of your motor and without jeopardizing any reliability, etc. with your new C5.

ALso, big congrats on stepping up to the worlds best AMERICAN sports car!

As they said above an intake Vararam, and the Halltech TRAP will show the biggest gains at the track. LTs will also give you noticable power. Mufflers are mostly for sound and looks not to much power.

In my opinion
Best mod for the money = 100 shot
Best sounding exhaust=slp loudmouth
Best intake = Vara Ram

total investment 1500 bucks

Congrats on the Vette! Im with everyone else here, intake and exhaust will show minimal gains til you get some LT headers and get a good dose of LS1Edit (which is exactly what i need).

I disagree,

Power can be found in the exhaust system without headers

I only tapped 106.5mph or so when stock with a Blackwing. With JUST the addition of Ti Z06 mufflers and gutted cats I regularly trapped 109-110mph. With LS1 Edit (no airfuel tuning yet), and ported MAF ends I trap in the high 110-111.5 range.

Now JUST doing a muffler system I'd have to agree. I think most of my new found power was the combo of no cats and the mufflers.

The 4:10 gears are the first mod you should do if your wanting real world "seat of your pants" results! The exhaust upgrade is nice sounding but really isn't going to make you that much faster with a stock motor. With 4:10's prepare for burnouts on demand and a set of DR.

Betcha I got more out of my exhaust upgrades than anyone would get out of a gear upgrade. 1/4mile times that is

Thanks for the replies. They have been very helpful. I am personally a big fan of of headers myslef. On my TA, with just a set of kook's LT's and ORY dropped me a half a second. It would have done better with a more aggresive clutch.

I know that the headers speak for themselves but as far as the rest of the exhaust and the intake components, I'm not really that familiar with on the C5. The Vara Ram seems very effecient but I wanted to here it from you guys. Also on the cat back systems, I was looking into the Ti systems just for weight reduction, not horspower. They are a little on the pricey side so I'm probably just going to go with sound preference. I would say all cat back systems are within 5 hp or so. If any of you guys have sound clips, you are welcome to post them.

Thanks again for all the replies. I love the vette so far.
